Online Tutoring

SMARTHINKING is a new tutoring assistance program available. Their service supplements the Student Support Services Center's existing academic support services by offering real-time online tutoring with "e-instructors" and homework help for core courses and skills 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Students can access live tutorials in writing across all subjects, math, accounting, statistics and economics, as well as a full range of study resources, including writing manuals, sample problems, research tools, and study skills manuals. Students can access the service from wherever they have a connection to the Internet. SMARTHINKING is not an answering or proofreading/editing service.

Southwestern Community College brought SMARTHINKING in to add another learning option for SWCC students. Whether students are stuck at 2AM on a problem set that is due on their instructor's desk in the morning, or need extra help communicating their thoughts in their writing assignments, SMARTHINKING can assist them.

Note: Southwestern students will receive 20 hours of free tutoring access over the course of the academic year.

Time is deducted according to the following uses:

• Live drop-in sessions: "Metered" to the minute of time spent working with an e-structor, plus 5 minutes for administration
• Submitted questions: 20 minutes
• Submitted essays or career writing: 35 minutes

Technology Requirements

SMARTHINKING's technology is designed to accommodate a range of technological expertise, hardware and Internet connections. For the service to work properly, SMARTHINKING recommends the following minimum system requirements:

Browser:
For Windows PC users - Netscape 4.07 or higher, or Internet Explorer 4.01 or higher. For Apple Mac OS users - Internet Explorer 4.5 or higher is required. Netscape browsers on the Apple Mac OS platform are not currently supported with the SMARTHINKING application. Mac users with a Netscape browser will experience difficulties. Internet Explorer for Mac is recommended.

Processor:
Pentium 100 processor (or Mac equivalent)
Connection: 56K modem recommended (28.8 K modem acceptable)

Windows XP users:
Please note that you may not have Java installed by default. Java is necessary in order to use the whiteboard. You will need to install a Java Runtime Environment from Microsoft or from Sun.
