The Southwestern Community College Art Department
strives to develop aesthetic sensibilities within both the liberal
and fine arts tradition. Our Art Appreciation and Art History classes
provide students with a fundamental understanding of art in a cultural,
historical and technical context to introduce them to art as a visual
language. This empowers the student, enabling them to develop and
strengthen their critical, observational and technical skills plus
acquaints them with the challenges facing artists in contemporary
society.
Art Classes may be taken in conjunction with all majors and minors
to augment preparation for specific career tracks and personal intellectual
enrichment.
Southwestern Community College offers a variety of studio classes
in fine art. The fundamental classes of 2 and 3-D design are essential
foundation art classes that will enhance all artistic considerations
and understanding. Painting, Watercolor, Drawing and Ceramics
enhance one’s technical and conceptual skills while enriching
ones’ collegiate experience.
Our Art Appreciation, Art History and Art for Elementary Teachers
classes broaden ones understanding of art historically, educationally
and practically. Art for elementary education teachers helps potential
elementary teachers develop a philosophy regarding the arts, expectations
regarding childrens’ art, writing art lesson plans that are
meaningful and creative, expose and understand learner outcomes
and understand the philosophy and theory behind child centered art
education.
