Mike Holmes - Head Coach
Mike Holmes begins his first season at the helm of the
Southwestern Community College men's basketball program in 2008-09.
Holmes comes to Southwestern from Ottumwa High School, where he has
been the head basketball coach and a high school administrator since
2002. He coaches his teams to play a unique style of basketball emphasizing
conservative man-to-man defense and ball possession on offense.
Holmes has been coaching basketball for almost 20 years.
With a strong work ethic and determination, he has worked his way
through the ranks in Iowa high school athletics. Holmes has gone into
a number of school districts not known for their athletic programs,
rebuilt them, and made them competitive in their respective leagues.
"We prepare our players tirelessly," states Holmes. "I believe in
paying strong attention to the fundamentals and spend a great deal
of time on the technical aspect of the game."
During his career, Holmes has received a number of coaching
honors. During 2003-04, he guided his team to a 4th place finish in
the state tournament, was named the 4A District Coach of the Year,
and was selected as the CIML-Metro Coach of the Year.
His first years in coaching were spent at the Waverly-Shell
Rock, Spirit Lake, and Allison-Bristow school districts in Iowa. He
was at Des Moines Roosevelt for five years in the late-90s and moved
to Cardinal Ritter in Indianapolis, IN, prior to his stint at Ottumwa.
At Southwestern, Holmes will also teach physical education
courses. He has his bachelor's degree from Simpson College in Indianola
and his master's degree from Iowa State University in Ames.
