Southwestern Loses a Nail Biter
SWCC traveled to Trenton Missouri tonight to play Marshalltown
in the first round of the NCMC Classic. Marshalltown jumped out to
an early 6-0 lead, but would see SWCC battle back to take a 41-33
lead with 3 minutes to go in the half. However Marshalltown would
score the final 6 points to close the gap to 41-39 at the half.
Marshalltown would build an early lead in the second
half, but Southwestern kept coming back and built a 5 point lead.
Back to back three point shots coupled with Anthony Davis' fourth
foul would give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. Marshalltown
built a lead as high as 10 with 30 seconds to go. Then with 3 seconds
to go and the Spartans trailing by 7 things got interesting. Kristian
Williams was fouled and made both free throws. SWCC forced a turnover
on the in bounds pass. Southwestern executed an out bounds play to
bring the score to within 3 with 1.3 seconds to go. Another Marshalltown
turnover gave the Spartans a shot at the buzzer that bounced off the
rim. The final score saw SWCC losing 89-86.
Anthony Davis paced the Spartans with 25 points and
11 rebounds. Laurice Ellison came off the bench for 20. The loss drops
the Spartans to 4-1 on the year.
Southwestern will take on the host school North Central
tomorrow at 6 in the final contest of the classic.
