Rita Schroeder - Head Coach
Coach Schroeder enters her twenty-second season at the helm of the
Southwestern Community College volleyball program. In that time
Rita has tallied a record of 644-301 which includes a winning percentage
of .681. She has been named District Coach of the Year five times
and has led the Spartans into the NJCAA National Championship Tournament
five times as well. Success has been second nature at Southwestern
since Schroeder’s arrival. On September 2, 2004 she tallied
career victory number 600. The 1999 squad finished third in the
NJCAA Division II National Championship Tournament while the 1993
squad finished seventh at the national championships. She has piloted
eleven teams to the Region XI finals and had eleven players nominated
as candidates for the NJCAA All-American team with nine receiving
All American status. During her tenure she has had a staggering
96 players selected to the All Region XI post season squads. Schroeder’s
teams not only take care of business on the court but have been
nationally recognized for their work in the classroom as well. Nine
teams have been selected for the NJCAA Team Academic Award. They
have also been selected eight times for the American Volleyball
Coaches Association Team Academic Award. During the 1993-1994 season
the Spartans were selected as the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year.
Her success at Southwestern has carried on beyond the courts of
Southwestern volleyball. She has been recognized by USA Volleyball
as the Cornbelt Region Female Coach of the Year and was also named
the Outstanding Program Director by USA Volleyball. She directed
the Southwestern Junior Volleyball Club from 1987-1999 and also
previously coached 16 and 18 & under elite teams. The Southwestern
graduate is a native of Treynor, Iowa. Schroeder was an All-Region
basketball player at Southwestern and transferred to Simpson College
in Indianola, Iowa where she continued her athletic excellence.
Following graduation from Simpson, she returned to Southwestern
as Admissions Counselor and Head Volleyball Coach.
Kate Burrell - Assistant Coach
The 2007 season will be the fourth on the sidelines for
Kate Burrell. She returned to Southwestern in the summer of 2004 to
teach in the psychology department. The Southwestern alum was a counselor
after graduating from Fort Hays State University where she received
a master of science degree in counseling and was a two-year starter,
team captain and academic all-conference performer for the Tigers.
Kate attended Southwestern from 1994-1996 and received numerous accolades.
During her time at Southwestern Kate was named All-Region, Regional
Tournament All-Tournament team, and Academic All-American.
Caitlin Jeske - Student Assistant
Coach
Caitlin
returns to the volleyball program as a student assistant coach. She
played at SWCC in 2005 and is currently attending Buena Vista University
in Creston, majoring in Psychology. The Eagle Grove, Iowa native is
granddaughter of legendary SWCC coach Ron "Fox" Clinton.
