CRESTON, IA—Southwestern Community College (SWCC) began the process of educating students about the Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate (ALICE) training program on Tues., October 14, 2014, from 8-10 a.m. in the college’s Instructional Center. Keith Olsen, SWCC employee and certified ALICE instructor, conducted the student training with assistance from John Coulter, Afton chief of police and certified ALICE instructor.
Activities are planned on the SWCC campus next week for National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, October 20-24. Get involved and learn about smart choices!
- Monday - Iowa State Patrol driving simulator will be in the Student Center from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
- Tuesday - "Be a Lifesaver, Drink Responsibly." Students will be handing out lifesavers on campus and before the volleyball game, which starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center gymnasium.
- Thursday - Campus Crawl starting at 7 p.m. in the parking lot east of Spartan Suites
- All Week - Information booth located outside the library in the Instructional Center.

The 2014 SmartStart Kickoff for high school students is this Wednesday, October 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the SWCC Creston campus.
This event is a great way for high school students to check out SWCC and its campus! Students will be able to sit in on college classes, visit program areas, talk with instructors and students, and tour the residence halls. High school students in attendance will receive lunch, a SWCC T-shirt, and have the opportunity to win door prizes. The college will be awarding two-$250 SWCC scholarships for senior attendees.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles #1398 of Creston presented a check to the Southwestern Community College Education Foundation, thanks to a donation from the Don Mullin Family Memorial, to award scholarships to four SWCC students.
Charlie Mundy, SWCC high school carpentry and building trades instructor in Osceola, was the recipient of the 2014 Iowa Masonic Teacher of the Year Award at the 170th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Iowa at Cedar Rapids on Sept. 18, 2014.
