Southwestern's Board of Trustees Holds April Meeting
Creston—The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees met Tuesday, April 13, 2010, at 5:30 p.m. in the administration center on the Creston campus.
During the meeting, the SWCC board approved the appointment of Cindy Cox, Bedford, to fill the college’s open District 7 board member position. A committee had been established at the March board meeting for the purpose of interviewing candidates to fill the open position.
Cox operates a venture called Fostering Literacy—an effort intended to deliver direct instruction services to youth in Iowa’s Child Welfare System and other at-risk youth. She and her husband also own and operate the Bedford Inn and Don Cox Auctions in Bedford.
The District 7 board member position was vacated in March with the resignation of Jan DeMott of Bedford, who had been a long-time board member for the college.
Also during the meeting, a public hearing was held for the Student Center cafeteria remodel project. Tom Lesan, SWCC vice president of economic development, noted four companies had attended a mandatory construction meeting for the project. Bids for the project will be opened at 2 p.m. on April 19, 2010, in the board room of the SWCC administration center. A special board meeting will be held at 8:15 a.m. on April 22 for consideration of the bids.
The board approved the Association of Community College Trustees annual dues of $2,635.
During the president’s report, Dr. Barb Crittenden noted that spring commencement will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 7, the annual golf fundraiser will be held on May 22 at Crestmoor Golf Club.
Matt Thompson, SWCC dean of students, reported there are 132 applications for on-campus housing for the 2010-11 school year. This is up from 80 applications at this time last year. Construction on the new dormitory, Spartan Hall, continues. The dorm is slated to be finished in time for the fall 2010 semester.
