The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees met electronically on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, at 7:30 a.m. in the president’s office in the college’s Administration Center.
Tom Lesan, SWCC vice president of economic development, spoke to the board regarding the college’s Five-Year Facilities Plan. Lesan described the facilities plan as a guiding document for facility changes and updates at the college, but explained that projects in the plan may be moved from year-to-year and additional projects added as needs arise. Following Lesan’s presentation, the board approved the Five Year Facilities Plan as presented.
In personnel, the board approved the resignation of Pedro Hernandez, physical education instructor, and the hiring of Lance Stonehocker, information technology systems networking instructor.
Hernandez, who had been at the college since 2014, is moving with his family back to their hometown in Puerto Rico.
Stonehocker, a May 2013 graduate of Southwestern, has been employed as an information systems technician at Clarke County Hospital in Osceola since 2014. Prior to that, he worked as a field technician for Sparrow Technologies in Carlisle. Stonehocker earned his Associate of Applied Science degree in business systems networking from SWCC in 2013 with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average.
Lesan reported to the board regarding the college’s Six Cent Levy, which will be on the ballot for voters on September 12. Lesan said he has numerous speaking engagements scheduled for the next three weeks throughout SWCC’s region to explain the levy to voters. Funds generated by the levy, which has been in place since September 2007, must be used by the college to purchase instructional equipment. The levy must be approved by a simple majority of voters.
Jerry Smith, board member from Osceola and SWCC Iowa Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) representative, briefed the board regarding the recent IACCT conference held in Davenport.
