November 21, 2011, CRESTON, IA—Southwestern Community College’s 21st Annual Athletic Fundraiser set a new record for the college on Friday evening, bringing in approximately $13,000 for athletic scholarships.
The event, which was held at the Elk’s Lodge in Creston, included a buffet dinner catered by The Windrow Restaurant; a program featuring statements from the head coaches of SWCC’s seven intercollegiate sports; and a raffle and auction with various items, including unique and autographed sports memorabilia, donated by local businesses and friends of the college.
The SWCC athletics department sold 169 tickets in advance of the event with approximately 150 individuals in attendance. Darwin West was the auctioneer for the evening. The highest selling item during the auction was a USA Baseball basket purchased for $500. The auction also included baskets representing each of SWCC’s intercollegiate sports, with the highest selling basket being the volleyball basket at $400.
Bill Krejci, SWCC athletic director and organizer of the event, appreciates the support received from so many SWCC supporters. “Thanks to everyone who attended and all the businesses and individuals who contributed prizes,” stated Krejci. “We could not pull off an event like this without the tremendous support of our local communities."
Funds raised for the event go to the SWCC Education Foundation for the purpose of athletic scholarships. The SWCC Athletic Fundraiser has been held since November 1990 when the program featured Johnny Orr, former Iowa State University head men’s basketball coach.
