Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the college’s Administration Center for their regular board meeting.
Bill Taylor, SWCC vice president of instruction, talked to the board regarding a proposal to partner with Union County Habitat for Humanity for the third year on construction of a house during the 2014-15 school year by SWCC’s high school carpentry program in Creston. Students from area high schools are eligible to enroll in the high school carpentry program. The Habitat for Humanity house will be built at 622 North Birch Street in Creston. The board authorized the college to enter into the building partnership agreement.
New Southwestern Community College Volleyball Coach Ting Liu didn’t have to travel far to find her latest recruit—Brittany Malone, 2014 East Union High School graduate.
Malone made two state volleyball appearances during her high school career. She was on the 2012 team that finished the season as Pride of Iowa Conference champs. She was named first team all-conference as defensive specialist. In addition to her success in volleyball, she also made it to state two years for track and left a legacy at East Union by beating school records in track.
Two Solon High School graduates—Brandon Dvorsky and Easton Ressler—made it official during the Iowa High School Clay Target Competition, May 30-June 1 in Cedar Falls, they are headed to Southwestern Community College in Creston this fall where they will participate in sports shooting.
Nick Ballou of Mount Pleasant has signed with the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) sports shooting team for the 2014-15 season.
Ballou is a May 2014 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School where he was a member of the high school trap shooting team.
“Nick rounds out a talented trio of sports shooters from Mount Pleasant,” SWCC Head Sports Shooting Coach Charlie Mundy explained. “I look forward to working with this group and having them on our team.”
This weekend, May 15-17, 2014, at the NJCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Mesa, AZ, Southwestern’ s men’s and women’s track teams continued the success they had during the regular season by turning in record breaking times and distances at the national meet.
Erin Coker, a May 2014 Cedar Rapids Kennedy graduate, is headed to Southwestern Community College (SWCC) to play for Ting Liu, who is in her first-year coaching the Spartans volleyball team.
During high school, Coker was a four-year starter for the Kennedy volleyball team. She played in two state tournaments and received all-metro and all-conference honors for her last three years of high school. In addition to her athletic honors, Coker was named to the Kennedy Honor Roll of Excellence all trimesters during high school and was a member of the Science National Honor Society.
Tiffany Carpenter of Creston, a Early Childhood Education major, signed on to the sports shooting team for the 2014-2015 season.
Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Head Sports Shooting Coach added another great recruit to his roster this week. Dustin Wolters, four-time Missouri State FFA Trap Shoot qualifier, will become a Spartan with the start of the fall 2014 semester.
Wolters, a May 2014 Maryville High School graduate, shot a 92/100 at the state shoot this year. During high school, he was a three-year golf letter winner, three year golf sectional qualifier, and a DARE peer advisor. He received the landscape management second place proficiency award and a group one state rating for the Livestock Evaluation Team.
Cameron Botting of Winterset has committed to join the Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC) sports shooting program starting fall 2014.
Botting is a recent Winterset High School graduate. During high school, he participated in cross country and soccer. He was a member of the Winterset varsity trap team.
He is the son of Dean and Karen Botting of Winterset.
