The 11th ranked Southwestern Spartans opened up conference play in Boone on Sat., January 9, with a 77-76 win vs 13th ranked DMACC. As both teams got off to a slow starts offensively, Southwestern was able to gain some rhythm giving them a 28-24 lead at the break. In the second half, the Spartans had the lead up to 13 points late in the second half before DMACC made their run to close the gap to five with time winding down.

Spartan MBB Ranked 11th

The first NJCAA Division II men's basketball rankings of 2016 were released and Southwestern checked in at number 11.  Southwestern is 13-3 on the year and returns to action against Pure Prep Academy on Wed., January 6, in Creston with a tip of 6:30 p.m.  In the previous rankings, Southwestern was number eight but dropped a road contest to NJCAA DI number 12 Indian Hills.

The Spartan Cafe is open this week, Mon., January 4, through Fri., January 8, from 7 a.m.-2 p.m. daily.  They will be closed on Saturday.  On Sunday the Spartan Cafe will resume their normal hours--Sunday, 4-7 p.m., and weekdays, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Jenna Faust

Friday, December 18, Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Coach Nick Ekel signed Jenna Faust of Earlham Community High School in Earlham to a National Letter of Intent to run cross country and track and field for the Spartans starting with the 2016-17 school year.

Faust owns a personal record of 21:54 in the 5,000m cross country distance, and was a member of the 2012 Earlham High team that finished fourth at the 2012 IGHSU 1A State Cross Country Championships.

Rita Schroeder

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) will induct Rita Schroeder, longtime volleyball coach, graduate, and student-athlete, as its third member of the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Sat., January 23, 2016, at approximately 2:30 p.m., prior to the men’s basketball game vs Iowa Lakes, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., in the college’s Student Center gymnasium.

Scott Haner, Erika Blair, and Lindsay Stoaks with interactive whiteboard

Creston, IA—CHS Processing and Food Ingredients, Creston, recently donated an Epson interactive whiteboard to Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC’s) agricultural department.  This technology-enabled whiteboard has been installed in a classroom at the college’s Ag Site.

Terrance Smith and the Spartans are 11-1 when he is on the court. After missing the first few games early in the year, Smith leads the team in scoring, rebounds and blocks. He averaged 21 points over the two games they played last week in wins versus Marshalltown and Central JV. He pulled down 10 rebounds in the two victories as well. Southwestern crept up the polls into the top 10 last week and looks to rise a spot or two after an undefeated week. 

“Terrance has been playing very consistent that past few weeks. On top of his offensive numbers he has been very good on the defensive end as well,” said Coach Todd Lorensen

Southwestern moved up from #9 to #8 in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings.  The Spartans used a pair of home wins to improve to 13-2 overall on the season.  The wins came over NJCAA Division I opponent Marshalltown 91-69 and non NJCAA member Central College JV by a score of 94-63.

Richard Welsch, Travis Stalder, and Steve Schmalzried

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) students Richard Welsch and Travis Stalder, both juniors from Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield, placed eighth in the hands-on portion of the 2015 Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC)/Iowa Automobile Dealers Association (IADA) High School Automotive Skills Contest on Friday, December 11, 2015, at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. This competition recognizes some of the best high school auto technicians in the state.
