On a day that honored long time coach, athletic director, and instructor Bill Krejci the Southwestern Men’s Basketball team won handily 86-67 over William Penn JV.  Krejci was inducted into the Southwestern Hall of Fame just before the game.  The local product, TJ Bower (pictured) of Nodaway Valley, stole the show on the court scoring 30 points which included 6-9 from beyond the arc.

Luther Hanna ForWebCreston, IA—Creston High School’s Hanna Luther signed a National Letter of Intent last week to play volleyball for the Spartans at Southwestern Community College (SWCC).

After winning nine games in a row to start the season, the number 11 ranked Spartan men’s basketball team suffered its first defeat of the season at North Central Missouri College.  The 84-83 victory by the Pirates, who are ranked #17 in the nation, avenged a 91-82 loss at Southwestern on November 10.

On Wednesday December 3, the  Spartans traveled to Trenton, Mo to take on the Pirates of North Central Missouri College for the second and final matchup of the season. It was close game throughout but the Pirates managed to come out on top and secure the win 58-49 over the Spartans.

Finishing undefeated for the month of November, with a record of 8-0, and adding a road win on Monday to improve to 9-0, the Southwestern men’s basketball team jumped all the way to #11 in the first regular season rankings released yesterday by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Defense set the tone for the game as the Spartans only allowed 21 first half points on way to a 49-21 half time lead at home against Central (NE) Community College.  “Having Ahmad Newsome back really improves our defense.  I felt that he and Jok Kut really impacted this game.  Newsome had eight assists and four steals while Jok had eight rebounds,” said Coach Todd Lorensen.

Bill Krejci, longtime Southwestern Community College athletic director/athletic fundraiser, coach, and instructor, will be inducted into the Southwestern Community College Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony to be held on Sat., December 6, 2014, at approximately 2:30 p.m., prior to the men’s basketball game vs William Penn, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., in the Student Center gymnasium.

PosterDay 2013

Research and display boards made by SWCC students in various classes will be available for perusing during the fall 2014 Poster Day on Wed., December 3, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., in the downstairs hallways of the Student Center.  Please stop by to view and evaluate the posters on display. 

The event is sponsored by the SWCC Undergraduate Research Committee (SWCCUR), which promotes innovative, creative use of critical thinking in the process of gaining and developing knowledge.

The Adelaide Australia team touring the United States played at Southwestern on November 26 and kept the game within one possession for the first 17 minutes of the game before 15 point burst allowed the Spartans to take a 42-26 lead into the break.  “They did a good job of spacing us out and hit some tough contested shots early on.  As we adjusted throughout the game I thought our defense improved,” said Coach Todd Lorensen.
