Dillon Bailey signs with SWCC Sports Shooting

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Head Sports Shooting Coach added a local recruit to his roster this week. Dillon Bailey, a senior at Creston High School, will become a Spartan with the start of the fall 2015 semester.

The Spartan men and women were back in action over the weekend at the Grinnell Indoor Invitational. Both teams turned in great performances in route to the men finishing second and the women 12th in the talent laden field.

Seth Starks turned in his best performance of the year going 2.00m (6-06.75’) to finish second in the high jump which qualified him for the indoor national championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On the women’s side Addie Herman finished seventh in the high jump. John Rivan continued his record breaking season when he posted a 6.83 in the finals of the 60 meter dash to set a new Grinnell indoor record as well as a new school record. Rivan also finished second in the 200 meters in a time of 22.26 which is a school record and it qualifies him for the 200 at the indoor national championships.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) men’s cross country team qualified among the top 10 academic teams in the nation following their fall 2014 season. The Spartans ranked seventh in the national team standings released recently by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Cross Country Coaches Association.

City Scene Quilt

Throughout the month of February, the Creston Fabricators, a local arts and fibers club, has more than 30 artistic quilts on display at the Southwestern Community College library in the Instructional Center on SWCC’s campus, 1501 West Townline Street, Creston.  The display is open to the public.

Sean Houston signs with SWCC baseball

Southwestern Community College’s baseball team has gained the commitment of a strong pitcher from Denison High School. Sean Houston will be joining Spartan baseball for the 2015-16 year.

Houston, who plays for the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs, was ranked 27th in the state, according to Prep Baseball Report. Pedro Hernandez, SWCC’s head baseball coach, considers him one of the top high school players in the state.

Ben Sanquist signs with SWCC for golf

Ben Sandquist, who will graduate from Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School in May 2015, has committed to Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Head Golf Coach Larry Shimono and the Spartan golf team.

Jeremy Fox

Jeremy Fox, SWCC professional music graduate (’96) and former professional music instructor (2002-2010), has been nominated for a Grammy in the “Best arrangement, instruments and vocals” category.  The nomination is for his arrangement of “All My Tomorrows,” featuring vocalist Kate McGarry and flugelhorn player Jared Hall.  The arrangement is from his “With Love” album, which is available on iTunes and Amazon.

According to Fox’s Web site, “The track features more than 40 orchestral players, piano (Daniel Strange), guitar (Rene Toledo), bass (Geoff Saunders), and drums (Michael Piolet).”

The 57th Grammy Awards are being held this weekend in Los Angeles, CA.  The live awards show will be broadcast on CBS starting at 7 p.m. Sunday night.

Storm Lake, IA--The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Spartans continued breaking records with a strong showing at the Buena Vista Invitational on Sat., January 31, 2015. John Rivan set his third track record, in as many tries, this season in the 60-meter dash, running a 6.92 in the Spartan-filled finals and nudging teammates Jaiden Brown, Justin Martin, and Bobby Neal who finished third, fourth and seventh in the field.

The Spartans kept their scoring ways putting up 20 points when Rivan, Theo Piniau, Brown, and Michael Flakes finished second, third, fourth and eighth in the 200-meter dash. Rivan’s time set a new school record. Piniau rounded out the sprint portion of the meet posting his fastest time of the year in the 400-meter dash, with a third place time of 50.70.
