The Adelaide Australia team touring the United States played at Southwestern on November 26 and kept the game within one possession for the first 17 minutes of the game before 15 point burst allowed the Spartans to take a 42-26 lead into the break.  “They did a good job of spacing us out and hit some tough contested shots early on.  As we adjusted throughout the game I thought our defense improved,” said Coach Todd Lorensen.

IMT classroom
Southwestern Community College’s 2nd Annual Advanced Industrial and Technology (AIT) Exploration Day was a great success!  During the event, a select group of students and their instructors from across southwest Iowa spent the day touring two local industries, Vanmark and Wellman Dynamics.  It was a fantastic learning experience as the tours reinforced in the students the practical applications of the Employability Skills and the Technology Literacy components set out by the Iowa Common Core.

The Spartans went on the road on Saturday November 22, to take on the Southeast Community College Storm. To start the game the Spartans fell behind early 6-0 due to some full court pressure from the Storm that forced several costly turnovers.

“This has been our biggest problem in every game this year. We have to find a way as a team and coaching staff to generate better starts to our games,” commented Coach Addae Houston. The Spartans went into half-time down 40-20 struggling to get anything going offensively. “It was a hard fought game in the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome. Our offense and defense improved but it was too little too late and once you get down on good teams they will not let you back in the game.”

Despite shooting 25 percent from the arc and 58% from the FT Line the Spartan basketball team won 67-64 at Southeast (NE) Community College on Saturday, November 22nd. “Road wins are hard to come by. I think it showed a lot about our young team to win a road game when we didn’t play our best. Southeast did a lot of things that caused us problems that we will have to fix when they come to our place on December 13,” said Coach Todd Lorensen.

The Spartan women could not hold on in yet another close loss on the road facing Grand View for second time this season falling to the Vikings 68-64.  Grand View took an early lead in the game 7-2 on consecutive three-pointers. The Spartans fought back to regain the lead at the half 35-32 behind great bench play from Jazzlyn WimbushPeyton Russell and Cambry Schluter who combined for 32 of the Spartans 64 total points. The bench was great for us but we have to find a way to put it all together from our starters and bench to finish these close games.
