Fall Tune Up Camp
Who: Boys grades K-12
When: November 8- K-8 (8:30-11 a.m.) & 9-12 (11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.)
Where: Gymnasium in Student Center on campus of Southwestern Community College
Cost: $20 which includes a T-shirt and admission to the November 10 home game
What to expect: Grades K-8 will be split up by age and level as best as possible and can expect a traditional camp environment- stations, contests, games. Grades 9-12 will be an intense day of workouts similar to what college level players go through on a daily basis.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) sports shooting team came home with a whole lot of hardware, including the overall team trophy and a number of individual trophies, following the Simpson Storm Invitational on Sat., September 13, 2014, at the Big Springs Shooting Complex in Searsboro. Other college teams competing included Midland University from Fremont, NE, Simpson College, and the University of Iowa.
The SWCC team took home the championship trophy for high team average. To win high team average, all fifteen of SWCC’s athletes had to shoot a higher average than the entire field of athletes.
Individual winners for the day from SWCC included Ethan Jolliff, sophomore from Indianola, who took home the trophy for skeet, shooting a 23/25 and Shelby Woods, freshman from Madison, MO, who took home the trophy for trap, shooting 50/50 and winning a shoot-off against an athlete from Midland.
CRESTON—Southwestern Community College (SWCC) will sponsor the 2014 SmartStart Kickoff for high school students from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, on the SWCC Creston campus.
The event—an open house for students—will be a great chance for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors to check out SWCC and its campus! Students will be able to sit in on college classes, visit program areas, talk with instructors and students, and tour the residence halls. High school students in attendance will receive lunch, a SWCC T-shirt, and have the opportunity to win door prizes. The college will be awarding two-$250 SWCC scholarships for senior attendees.
Creston, IA—Southwestern Community College (SWCC) has announced Creston’s Randy Cook will be the college’s next chief financial officer (CFO), replacing Teresa Krejci, who recently relocated to Des Moines after serving as the college’s CFO since 1997.
Cook, a certified public accountant, received his bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1987 from Northwest Missouri State University. He has been employed as an audit manager by Draper, Snodgrass, Mikkelsen & Co., P.C. since June 1994. Prior to that, he was the senior accountant for Harold Voggesser, CPA. Cook is a 1982 graduate of Creston High School and a 1984 graduate of SWCC.
The Spartans hosted the seventh ranked Kirkwood Eagles last night, Wednesday, September 10. The Spartans showed much improvement and fight to start off the night, keeping pace with the Eagles but falling short in each game, 21-25, 20-25, and 17-25.
The Spartans will take to the road this weekend, September 12-13, for a two-day tournament in Marshalltown against four non-conference teams.
Elevate Advanced Manufacturing, a statewide outreach campaign to promote careers and training in advanced manufacturing, announced Gibson Memorial Library in Creston, is the recipient of a $500 grant to implement programming to educate young people and their parents about the varied career opportunities in advanced manufacturing.
Southwestern Community College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Todd Lorensen has released the teams schedule for the 2014-2015 season. The Spartans tip off the regular season on Monday, November 3, versus the Yellowjackets of Graceland University. The rest of the non-region schedule is highlighted by a November 29 visit from former Spartan Head Coach Jerry Drymon and Central Nebraska. The Spartans finish the fall semester schedule with a visit to Iowa Western on December 17. The Region XI schedule tips off on January 14 against Ellsworth in Creston.
The NJCAA national DI cross country week one polls were announced recently. Both the Spartan men’s and women’s teams were included in the rankings. The Spartan men, ranked tenth, are among five other Iowa community colleges to make the top 20. The Spartan women, ranked 13th, are also among several Iowa community colleges to be nationally ranked. The high concentration of Region XI colleges in the ranking is a true testament of the high level of cross country competition there is in Iowa.
SWCC will host its annual Community Awareness Day on Wednesday, September 10, from 9-11 a.m. in the main hallway of the Instructional Center. A variety of community agencies will be on hand to provide information to SWCC students and staff about the services they provide.

The Spartan volleyball team traveled to Mason City and defeated the NIACC Trojans on Wednesday, September 3. After the Spartans quickly won game one (25-16), the Trojans made a comeback in game two winning 25-19. The Spartans then won the next two close games and the match, 25-22 and 25-20.
The Spartans will travel to Highland, KS this weekend to take part in the Highland Community College Invitational tournament.
