Yaasmyn Spivey signs with Spartan women's basketball

Yaasmyn Spivey, a senior at Omaha Central High School, is one of the most recent additions to the Southwestern Community College women’s basketball roster for their 2016-17 run. Spivey signed with the Spartans on April 8, 2016.

Southwestern Women’s Basketball Coach Addae Houston said the addition of Spivey will make the Spartans a more dynamic team on offense with her style of play. Spivey, who is 5’7” and averaged 12.4 points per game her senior year, was a 2016 All Nebraska Class A Honorable Mention selection and played in the 2016 All-Star Team for the 15th Annual Buffalo Wild Wings/Boys & Girls Club of the Midlands game, played April 1 at Omaha Benson High School.

Jazz Night Header with photos of students

Grab a cup of coffee, relax, and enjoy as students from Southwestern Community College's professional music program perform at Adams Street Espresso, 213 W. Adams Street, in Creston, on Fri., April 22, 2016, from 7-9 p.m., during SWCC Jazz Night.

Various small ensembles will be performing vocal and instrumental music such as R&B, funk, and vocal jazz.  Approximately 20 students will perform throughout the evening.  This event is open to the public.

Fallyn Beemer signs with Spartan women's basketball

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Head Women’s Basketball Coach Addae Houston didn’t travel far to find his latest recruit, Fallyn Beemer of Bedford. Beemer, a 5’6” guard, signed with the Spartans on April 8.

Houston said Beemer can stretch the defense with amazing range from beyond the arc and will be just what the Spartans need after losing graduating sophomore guard Cambry Schluter, who was the second leading three-point shooter on the team.

Mason City, Iowa – TRACES Center for History and Culture is bringing its mobile exhibit (shown in photo above), “At Home in the Heartland: Forgotten Stories of How Iowans Got to be ‘Us,’” to the Southwestern Community College Creston campus on Thurs., April 21, 2016, from 8:30-11:30 a.m.  The exhibit is housed in a retrofitted school bus, the “BUS-eum.”

Tyrell Paul

On Saturday, April 2, the Southwestern Spartan Track & Field team traveled to Concordia University in Seward, NE to participate in the Concordia Outdoor Invite. Competing under sunny skies in the 65 degree weather, the Spartans successfully battled the persistent gusty winds throughout the day. In the non-scored meet, the Spartans turned in several outstanding performances.

Taylor Damewood Signs with Spartan Volleyball

Taylor Damewood of Southwest Valley High School in Corning signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her volleyball career at Southwestern Community College while working toward her Associate of Arts degree.

CRESTON—High school freshmen who participate in the Educational Talent Search (ETS) program will have the opportunity to take part in an overnight campus visit on Tues., May 10, at the Southwestern Community College Creston campus.  Space is limited to the first 20 participants.

Terrence Smith

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) released its Division II All-American Team this week and Sophomore Terrance Smith from Memphis, TN, was selected as a Third Team All-American.  He is the first Spartan men’s basketball player to be named to an All-American Team since David Kragel was selected in the 1974 season.

The Southwestern athletic department has scheduled a number of youth basketball camps for summer.  Registration is now open for these camps:

Individual Skills Camp - K-2nd grade. June 13-16, 8:30-9:30 a.m. Cost $35. Open to boys and girls.

Individual Skills Camp - 3rd-8th grade. June 13-16, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Cost $95. Open to boys and girls.

Elite Boys Camp - 9th-12th grade. July 29, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Cost $40.

High School Boys Team Camp - June 18-19 and July 30-31.

PTK Officers

Beta Eta Nu, the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, held its spring induction ceremony on Sun., April 3, 2016, at 3 p.m., in room 180 of the Instructional Center.  Bill Huntington, principal at Sidney High School and former career and technical education recruiter and cross country/track and field coach at SWCC, was the guest speaker for the event.
