The 2016-17 basketball season saw two ICCAC men’s basketball teams ranked No. 1 this year. Kirkwood started the season at the top spot after winning the national title last year.  By the sixth poll of the season, Southwestern had taken over as the nation’s best for the first time in school history. The Spartans held the No. 1 ranking for six of the final eight polls, including the most recent.

Southwestern won the regular season and postseason Region XI title, clinching their first national tournament trip since 1999. The Spartans also broke a school-record for wins in a season (with the previous being 25 wins, a mark reached in the 1977, 1997, and 2016 seasons), and only have one blemish heading into the national tournament, a 78-75 loss on Feb. 11 at Kirkwood.
