The Spartan Volleyball team traveled to Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, November 4 to play their final match of the season against the Kirkwood Eagles. The Spartans defeated the Eagles on their home court a month before in a five game match. Despite a great performance from the Spartans, they failed to knock off the Eagles again, losing in five, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 25-22, 9-15.

PTK Inductees

Beta Eta Nu, the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, held its fall induction ceremony on Thurs., October 29, 2015, at 4 p.m., in room 140 of the Instructional Center. 

Members inducted during the ceremony included Brenna Baker, Isa Howe, Jennifer Mikulecky, Rosa Rosales, Selena Sampson, Nancy Sanchez, Raegen Smith, and Ana Vasquez.

Using a 44-12 first half, Southwestern rolled to a 100-43 win in their home opener vs Graceland University JV on Tues., November 6.  Freshmen guards Keshawn Wilson, Calvin Chambers, and Jordan Johnson all finished in double figures with 19, 14, and 11 points respectively.  Sophomore guard Ahmad Newsome added 16 points while TJ Bower hit three first half long balls for nine points. 

“I think we have an exciting team to watch," commented Todd Lorensen, Southwestern's head coach.  "We have a lot of things that need to improve, but I like our group.”

On Sunday, November 1, 2015 the Spartan cross country teams traveled to Fort Dodge to compete in the Region XI Championship meet. Competing in a field with NJCAA #1 Iowa Central, #9 Iowa Western, #21 NIACC, and #24 Indian Hills Community College, Southwestern’s men’s team finished sixth out of the six full teams, as Iowa Lakes Community College did not field a full team. The Spartans were led by freshman Inia Sili (Suva, Fiji) who placed 16th in a time of 28:27. Sili’s effort earned him Honorable Mention All-Region honors. Teammate Gabe Esser (Winterset, Iowa) was the second man across the line with a 26th place finish in 29:03. Joe Blake, Gerardus Boelen, and Chasen Selsor rounded out the scoring for the Spartans.

The Southwestern Men’s Basketball team tipped over their season this weekend by going 1-1 at the Emerson Classic hosted by Marshalltown Community College.

On Friday night, the Spartans lost to NJCAA Division I opponent Highland (IL) by a score of 71-67.  A slow start led to a 11-3 lead by Highland with 13:00 to in the first half before Southwestern finished the half on a 36-20 run to lead 39-31 at the break.  In the second half the Spartans built up a 14 point lead before Highland stormed back to win 71-67.  Southwestern allowed 20 offensive rebounds, shot 9-33 from the arc, and 6-10 from the charity stripe.  “We did some really good things at times and had some really bad execution at other times.  That’s typical this time of year but they are things we need to avoid if we want to win tough games like this,” said Head Coach Todd Lorensen.

Approximately 20 individuals competed in the first-ever SWCC Week 5K Run/Walk on Sat., October 24, 2015, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships for SWCC track & field/cross country student-athletes.
