RAGBRAI's Creston stop is Mon., July 25, 2016! 

The Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI) is bringing its seven-day bicycle journey to Creston in 2016, for a one-night stop, on Mon., July 25.  According to its Web site, this will be RAGBRAI's 43rd year.  It is the oldest, largest and longest bicycle touring event in the world.

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) will be participating and will have housing available.

The Southwestern track and field team competed at two weekend events on February 5-6, with select students competing at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the University of Nebraska and the full team at the Grinnell Indoor Invitational at Grinnell College.  At Nebraska, Seth Starks (Springfield, NE) highlighted the Spartan contingent with his 19th place finish in the men’s high jump with a jump of 6-4.75.

For the first time in 2016 the Southwestern men’s basketball lost to fall to 23-4 overall and 8-1 in league play.  They lost at #14 Kirkwood by a score of 86-55.  “Kirkwood out played us in every facet of the game. I’m disappointed we didn’t perform better but we are still in a great spot,” said Coach Todd Lorensen.

KeShawn Wilson scored 27 points while making eight three pointers for a game high scoring as Southwestern won 81-55 at NIACC on Wednesday, February 10. The win improved the Spartans to 23-3 overall and 8-0 in league play while NIACC fell to 13-11 and 1-7 in the league. Simon Joseph had 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Jordan Johnson stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, nine assists, and six steals.

Two Spartan baseball team members were recently named to the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Division II players of the week for the week of February 11, 2016. Spartan short stop Samuel Vega has been named player of the week, and right handed pitcher Brian Anderson was name pitcher of the week.

Southwestern’s annual Transfer Day will be held on Wednesday, February 17, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the Student Center.  At Transfer Day, SWCC students and advisors have the opportunity to talk with transfer representatives from many four-year colleges and universities all in one place.  No matter where you are in the transfer planning process, Transfer Day allows you to do everything from beginning to search for your transfer school to asking those last minute questions before you transfer.  

At this year’s Transfer Day, the following colleges and universities will be in attendance:

SWCC vs. Grand View JV

The Spartans men’s basketball team jumped another spot in the most recent NJCAA D2 polls from #5 to #4 and still received a single vote for the top spot in the nation.  Southwestern went 2-0 on the week with an 82-51 victory over Grand View JV and a 76-74 win over DMACC.

Jordan Johnson

Jordan Johnson had his most efficient game to date in a Spartan uniform with 25 points on eight of nine shooting and four of four from behind the arc.  His stellar performance led to his selection as ICCAC Division II Men’s Player of the Week.

2015 Cross Country Team

The NJCAA Cross Country Coaches Association announced the men’s cross country team had earned Scholar All-American honors as a team for their 3.37 team GPA during the Fall 2015 semester.
