2014-15 Men's Basketball Team

Mark your calendars!  The Spartans men’s basketball team is headed into tournament action next week.  Southwestern Community College (SWCC) will host their Region XI Quarterfinal game on Tues., March 3, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. in the SWCC Student Center gymnasium.  Their opponent will be determined following the end of regular season play this Saturday.  The Spartans head into tournaments as the #3 seed.

The SWCC softball team is hosting a free-will donation breakfast this Sun., March 1, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Center.   This event is open to the public!

Breakfast will include pancakes, French toast, eggs, sausage, and coffee.

Pink Ribbon

Come support the Spartans women's basketball team at the PINK OUT game for cancer awareness this Sat., February 28, in the Student Center gymnasium, as the SWCC team faces Iowa Lakes Community College at 1 p.m.  Various activities will take place during the event including a cancer awareness display by Greater Regional Medical Center, a cancer awareness ribbon for each spectator, and a halftime event by the SWCC student ambassadors.  The Spartan team will wear their pink cancer awareness uniforms.

One more thing, be sure to wear pink and you'll get in free!

Klarissa McElroy Signs with the Spartans

Clarinda High School outfielder Klarissa McElroy has committed to playing for the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Spartans for the 2015-16 year.

High school honors for McElroy include being named first team all-district, second team all-conference, and third team all-state; as well as being named defensive player of the year for her team.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Education Foundation is excited to announce the addition of ten annual scholarships, through the H. Dale and Lois Bright Foundation, allowing qualifying students to graduate from college debt-free.  The Bright Scholars of Iowa awards are available to Iowa high school seniors who are strong academically but may lack the financial means to earn college degrees.

Creston, IA—Two teams of students from Southwestern Community College’s (SWCC) agricultural department represented the college at statewide competitions, during the Post-Secondary Ag Student Organization (PAS) Spring Conference, held February 4-5, 2015, at Honey Creek Resort in Moravia.

Volunteers at SWCC to Help Families Fill Out FAFSA

Iowa students and their families can get free assistance with forms required to file federal financial aid during an Iowa College Goal Sunday event, at Southwestern Community College (SWCC) in Creston on Wed., February 25, from 3-7 p.m. in room 119 of the Technical Center.  Students planning to attend any college are welcome to participate in this event.

The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met electronically on Tues., February 10, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. in the Administration Center on the Creston campus. 

The board set a public hearing for review and approval of the college’s fiscal year 2016 budget.  Randy Cook, SWCC chief financial officer, said the estimated taxation rate for the coming year will be $.079922 per $1,000 taxable valuation.  The public hearing was set for March 10, 2015, at 5:30 p.m., in the board room of the college’s Administration Center.

Dillon Bailey signs with SWCC Sports Shooting

Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Head Sports Shooting Coach added a local recruit to his roster this week. Dillon Bailey, a senior at Creston High School, will become a Spartan with the start of the fall 2015 semester.

The Spartan men and women were back in action over the weekend at the Grinnell Indoor Invitational. Both teams turned in great performances in route to the men finishing second and the women 12th in the talent laden field.

Seth Starks turned in his best performance of the year going 2.00m (6-06.75’) to finish second in the high jump which qualified him for the indoor national championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On the women’s side Addie Herman finished seventh in the high jump. John Rivan continued his record breaking season when he posted a 6.83 in the finals of the 60 meter dash to set a new Grinnell indoor record as well as a new school record. Rivan also finished second in the 200 meters in a time of 22.26 which is a school record and it qualifies him for the 200 at the indoor national championships.
