Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of trustees met Tuesday, September 8, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. in the Administration Center on the Creston campus.

Jolene Griffith, SWCC director of human resources, briefed the board regarding revisions made to the Quality Faculty Plan.  The Quality Faculty Plan, in accordance with Iowa Code, has been in place since 2003 to assure the hiring and developing of quality faculty members at the college.  Following Griffith’s presentation, the board approved the Quality Faculty Plan as presented.

The Spartan baseball program's Fall High School Baseball League starts this Sunday, September 13.  High school players, please be at the field at 11 a.m. Rosters will be posted soon.  If questions, contact Pedro Hernandez, head baseball coach.

This past Friday the Spartan men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in a dual meet against Drake University at Ewing Park in Des Moines. With temperatures in the low 90's, both teams lost to Drake on the 4,000m course.  Drake "perfect scored" both teams by placing their top five runners ahead of the Spartan’s top five.

The Spartan volleyball team traveled to Highland, KS this past weekend to compete in the Highland Volleyball Classic. The Spartans won their first match against regional opponent Ellsworth CC in three sets, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21.

SWCC Golf at Midwest Collegiate Open

The Spartan golf team competed Monday, August 3 and Tuesday, September 1 in the Midwest Collegiate Open hosted by William Penn University. The Spartans had a full men’s team compete and an individual woman. “We are a young team getting our feet wet,” says head golf coach Doug North. “We had our stretches of good holes, as a team we had 13 birdies. We don’t have any veteran leadership so we need to take the positives and build from that. The Preserve at Lake Rathbun is an always-challenging course that isn’t friendly to errant tee shots."

SWCC in a Day Banner

The admissions department is hosting SWCC in a Day, a college visit day for high school students, on Mon., September 28, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

This event will provide a great opportunity for future SWCC students to get a feel for what SWCC has to offer.  Students will hear about all SWCC’s program offerings--career and technical education-related as well as transfer-related--and the careers that go along with them.  Participating students will have opportunities to experience dorm life, visit classes, meet instructors, and hear from industry professionals.

The Southwestern cross country team traveled to the Iowa Western CC campus to compete in the NJCAA Region XI Time Trial on Saturday, August 22. Both the men's and women's teams placed at the back of the pack, behind where head coach Nick Ekel hoped to be. Despite their disappointing finish, he was encouraged by what he described as a competitive fire.

Carmen Subbert

Sophomore Carmen Subbert from Stanton was named the ICCAC DII volleyball athlete of the week for August 20-30, 2015. Subbert led the Spartans in scoring for three of their last four matches, including a match-high 18 points on 17 kills in a match against Highland Community College on August 22. Subbert stands in 30th place in all of NJCAA DII with a average of 3.9 points per set.

SWCC vs Grand View JV

After splitting at pair of wins and losses at a weekend tournament in late August, the Spartans defeated Grand View JV in four games (25-18,25-23,16-25,25-22) during their home opener on Tuesday, September 1.
