Pay it Forward (PIF) Week is coming! It’s an annual tradition at SWCC and it’s scheduled for April 21-25, 2014! If you’d like to order a PIF T-shirt for this year’s festivities, the cost is $8 per shirt or $10 for XXL and larger sizes. Shirts must be pre-ordered using the PIF Online T-shirt Order Form--SORRY, THE ORDER DEADLINE HAS PASSED--and paid for by Thurs., April 3!
For those of you who are new to SWCC, during PIF Week, SWCC students, faculty, and staff get involved by encouraging positive behaviors and service to the community. The hope is that these efforts will ripple and spread community-wide in Creston, Osceola, and Red Oak.
If questions, please contact Caitlyn Lesan.
Amanda Spencer of Bedford joined the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) sports shooting team at semester.
Spencer became a student at SWCC at the beginning of the fall 2013 semester. She is in SWCC’s arts and sciences transfer program with a goal of completing her associate of arts degree in May 2015. Spencer is a May 2013 graduate of Bedford High School.
She is the daughter of Jack and Carmen Spencer of Bedford.
Taranveer Gill (pictured in red), a 6'3" perimeter player from Toronto, Canada, has made a verbal commitment to be a part of the Southwestern Men’s Basketball program for 2014-15. Gill will bring a wealth of experience to the Spartans from his basketball exploits north of the border. Last fall, Gill competed in the Up to the Time Basketball League, netting Rookie of the Year honors as well as being named a second-team all star. He also received an invitation to compete in a junior national tournament held in Michigan. Gill choose Southwestern because of its feel. He said, “I feel like this is a great community that embraces and welcomes everybody in.”
Head Coach Mike Holmes said, “To get back to where we were a year ago, we need some impact guys who will bring some energy to the floor and have some skills not only to learn our system, but to be able to make plays out of it. I think Taranveer will be very well suited to what we do.”
Gill plans to study in the college transfer program and earn his Associate of Arts degree.
The Southwestern Community College board of trustees held its regular March 2014 meeting on Tues., March 11, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the college’s Administration Center.
Teresa Krejci, SWCC chief financial officer, presented to the board regarding the fiscal year 2015 budget. Krejci said the estimated taxation rate per $1,000 of taxable valuation will be slightly less than last year, at $0.79617 per $1,000 for fiscal year 2015, as opposed to $0.79675 per $1,000 for fiscal year 2014. According to Krejci, the college’s total property tax asking will continue to represent 2.5 percent or less of a property owner’s total property tax. The board approved the college’s fiscal year 2015 budget as presented by Krejci.
Jack Jones and Eric Freed, both seniors at Mt Ayr Community High School, have signed letters of intent to run cross country and track and field at Southwestern Community College starting with the fall 2014 semester.
Head Coach Bill Huntington has nothing but praise for these two athletes. "We see a lot of potential in these young men, who are both successful multi-sport athletes," Huntington explained. "Eric was a state place winner in wrestling and Jack was an outstanding basketball player. Their times in cross country and track lead us to believe that they will be very successful for us." Huntington said Jones and Freed, who are coming from a very good track and field program led by Coach Brad Elliott, understand the commitment that it takes to be at the top.
Travis Goodrich, a left-handed pitcher and outfielder from Millard North High School in Omaha, NE, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Spartan baseball team in the fall of 2014.
The Southwestern Community College board of trustees held a special meeting on February 27, 2014, to discuss and approve plans related to Spartan Court, the residence hall being constructed on campus.
Public hearings were held for the fire sprinkler and electrical bid packages. No oral or written objections were heard or submitted for either project.
Southwestern, a team that attempts to control the tempo, went into ultra tempo control Tuesday night at Iowa Lakes, attempting to knock off the 17th-ranked team in the nation on their home floor. The execution gave Southwestern their chance, but the Lakers were able to make plays in the second half to extend their two-point halftime lead en route to a 52-36 win. For Southwestern, Jared Theis (pictured), Elliott Hamdeed, and Dustin Lyden all played their final games as Spartans. Coach Mike Holmes said, “Our sophomores exhibited a good deal of resiliency this year. We were young to begin with and then our rotation whittled way down, making our circumstances very challenging. Those guys stayed the course and gave very good mental and physical effort throughout the season.”
Southwestern Community College (SWCC) has announced Ting Liu of Hutchinson, KS, will be the next head volleyball coach for the SWCC Spartans volleyball program. Liu replaces Melissa Blessington, who recently resigned her position at SWCC to become head volleyball coach at Ottawa University in Ottawa, KS.
Southwestern will attempt to pull off the same magic act it performed two years ago by upsetting a number-two seed in regional play. Tuesday, March 4, Southwestern will travel to Iowa Lakes for the first round of the tournament. The Spartans dropped a contest Saturday in the same locale, 64-41. Coach Mike Holmes is hoping history does some repeating. “Two years ago,” Holmes said, “we had a similar circumstance to this year’s group. We were young, we were slowly getting better, and we had to play the two seed on their home floor. We walked away with a huge win and some great confidence. I would love to see these guys achieve the same thing.”
Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be webcast at the Iowa Lakes Community College Web site.
