The Southwestern men and women opened their seasons at the 2013 Region XI time trial in Mason City on the North Iowa Area Community College campus.
The men put four in the top 30 and finished fourth as a team behind two teams that finished in the top 25 at the national meet last season. Iowa Central did not run a team at the meet, but did have the individual national champion.
Aaron Ward led the Spartans on the 5k course, crossing the line in 18:08 in 16th place. Sophomore Rayvonne Brown followed placed 24th with a time of 18:42.
Freshmen Ben Friederichs, Cassidy Warson, and Chasen Selsor rounded out the scoring for the men in 28th, 30th, and 34th respectively.
For the women, Hannah Murphy led the squad to a sixth place finish. She placed 18th in 24:29.
Sarah McKeon was also in the top 30, placing 29th overall in 27:01.
Also scoring for the Spartans was Elizabeth Hurley-Boyd, Kristin Klocksiem, and Brei Theisen.
The Spartans are back in action Friday evening in Indianola at the Bill Buxton Invitational. The women are slated to start at 5:30 p.m. and the men will follow.
