Coach Doug NorthHead Coach:  Doug North

Doug North has been head coach for men’s and women’s golf at Southwestern since June 2015. North prides himself in being at the helm of a program with a history that dates back to the late 1960s.

“I’m very thankful to have this opportunity to make a difference at Southwestern,” North stated. “The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference [ICCAC] has a rich history and has been dominated by a few schools on the golf scene. Each year, we’re making an impact and seeing what we can do about that trend.”

Since North took over the helm, the Spartan golf teams have compiled more than 60 victories over opponents at tournaments in Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, and Nebraska. Of those tournaments, the Spartans won the 2016 SCC Invitational held at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, and finished second at the Graceland University Men’s Invitational. The Spartan men recently posted a school-record 296 at the Graceland University Invitational and the women posted a school-record 379 at the Iowa Central Spring Invitational, both during the 2016-2017 school year.

Since 2015, academics have been a priority with 12 golfers earning ICCAC All-Academic Second Team honors (3.0-3.49 GPA), 14 golfers earning ICCAC All-Academic First Team honors (3.5-4.0 GPA), three golfers earning NJCAA All-Academic Third Team honors (3.60-3.79 GPA), and one earning NJCAA All-Academic First Team honors (a perfect 4.0 GPA). To date, Avery Elliott is the only Spartan under Coach North to garner All-Region accolades on the course, earning Second Team All-Region for his play at the Region XI Championship.

North has an extensive history with the game of golf. North is a graduate from Creston High School, where he competed as the number one golfer for many years. He also led the Spartans in his only season as a collegiate golfer.

“I missed out and didn’t continue my playing career, no regrets, but I will work as hard as any of my players at getting them to compete at the next level if that is what they want to do,” North reflected.

North obtained his United States Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF) Level III teaching license shortly after college. The qualifications to obtain that level of licensure are: five days of golf instruction; an exam to check set-up, grip, posture, alignment, and the swing of a student; and a playing test including four rounds on a championship caliber course to meet program requirements.

Southwestern Accomplishments Under Coach North since 2015:
ICCAC Second Team All-Region - 1
ICCAC All-Academic First Team - 14
ICCAC All-Academic Second Team - 12
NJCAA All-Academic First Team - 1
NJCAA All-Academic Third Team - 3
