Head Coach: Doug North
Doug North was named head men’s and women’s Golf coach at Southwestern in June of 2015. North is excited to take over a program with a history that dates back to the late 1960’s.
“I’m very thankful to have this opportunity, and I really look forward to making a difference at Southwestern,” North stated after the announcement. “The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference [ICCAC] has a rich history and has been dominated recently by a few schools on the golf scene, we’ll see what we can do about that trend.”
After North’s first year, the Spartan men’s team compiled 22 victories over opponents at tournaments in Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, and Nebraska. Of those tournaments, the Spartans finished 3rd at the Iowa Lakes Spring Invitational in Okoboji, Iowa and 5th at the SCC Invitational in Beatrice, Nebraska. The Spartans were close to breaking through and competing for a tournament win, posting team rounds of 309 and 312 later in the season.
Throughout the season, five Spartans earned Academic All-Region First Team (3.5 or greater GPA): Ben Sandquist, Cole Campbell, Connor Giles, Brooke Decker, and Evy Wells; four Spartans earned Academic All-Region Second Team (3.0 – 3.49 GPA): Avery Elliott, Christian Groumoutis, Jared Baier, and Sam Hartsock. Multiple Spartans had their time in the spotlight while leading the Spartans, Avery Elliott garnered Second Team All-Region for his play at the Region XI Championship, Ben Sandquist and Dominick Moreno also cracked the top 10 in tournaments throughout the season.
In his first season at the helm of the Spartan program, North is proud of the way the team handled a transition of coaches and persevered both on and off the golf course. “We really competed this spring. Almost everybody’s scoring average dropped from fall to spring, once we bought in and really put forth the effort, the results were there. Academics are a priority, and the team demonstrated that this year.”
North has an extensive history with the game of golf. North is a graduate from Creston High School, where he competed as the number one golfer for many years. He also led the Spartans in his only season as a collegiate golfer. “I missed out and didn’t continue my playing career, no regrets, but I will work as hard as any of my players at getting them to compete at the next level if that is what they want to do.”
North obtained his United States Golf Teachers Federation (USGTF) Level III teaching license shortly after college. The qualifications to obtain that level of licensure are: five days of golf instruction, an exam to check set-up, grip, posture, alignment, and the swing of a student, and a playing test where four rounds on a championship caliber course had to meet program requirements.
