KANSAS CITY, MO. (May 1, 2017) – After leading his team to a national title in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Todd Lorensen, Southwestern Community College head men’s basketball coach, has earned honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Lorensen is the NABC Coach of the Year for the NJCAA.

Team members and coaches at Capitol

The Southwestern men's basketball team, 2017 NJCAA DII National Men's Basketball Champions, was honored with House Resolution 21 at the state Capitol in Des Moines on Wednesday, April 14, 2017.

The House Resolution was, "An Act recognizing and congratulating the Southwestern Community College men's basketball team and program on its outstanding regional and national athletic achievements."

State representatives reading the resolution included Representative Cecil Dolecheck-Mt. Ayr, Representative Joel Fry-Osceola, and Representative Tom Moore-Griswold.

The National Junior College Athletic Association released the Division II All-American Teams on Thursday, April 13, 2017, and two Spartans earned this prestigious honor.  Southwestern, the 2017 NJCAA DII National Champions, was the only team to have more than one player recognized as an All-American.

Todd Lorensen, head coach of the Southwestern Community College men’s basketball team, remains a busy man following the Spartans National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DII National Championship victory in Danville, IL, on March 25, 2017. Lorensen has received a number of post-season accolades following his record-breaking season at the helm of the Spartans—being named the HoopDirt.com Junior College Coach of the Year by The Hoop Group, acting as guest speaker for two upcoming Nike Clinics, and coaching the 2017 NJCAA Men’s Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game in late-April.
