Dave Kragel

David Kragel, 1974 graduate of Southwestern Community College, will become the first alumnus inducted into Southwestern's Athletic Hall of Fame for collegiate athletic accomplishments on Wed., September 7, 2016, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center Gymnasium.  The ceremony will take place prior to the Spartans playing Iowa Lakes Community College in conference volleyball action.

Kragel, a 1972 graduate of Corning High School, attended Southwestern from 1972 to 1974.  He played basketball and baseball for the Spartans.  During his sophomore basketball season, he led the nation in scoring and earned First Team All-American honors.  Kragel has had a highly successful professional career as head coach for the Walters State Community College women's basketball team since 1977.  He has surpassed 900 wins as a coach, making him fifth overall for all-time winningest coaches in the NJCAA.

The agenda for the September 7 Hall of Fame induction follows:

  • 5:30 p.m. - Reception, Student Center (upstairs)
  • 6:30 p.m. - Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Student Center gymnasium
  • 7 p.m. - Volleyball game vs Iowa Lakes

Clayton Rhoads signs with Spartan Basball

Omaha’s Clayton Rhoads, a 2016 graduate of Omaha Burke High School, has committed to playing for the Southwestern Community College Spartans baseball program starting with the fall 2016 semester.

Sisilia Seavula

Sisilia Seavula, Southwestern Community College sophomore student-athlete, has qualified for the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro this August.

Ethan Westphal

Congratulations to former Southwestern Spartan baseball standout Ethan Westphal who pitched his debut game with the Grand Junction Rockies on July 13.  Westphal, a 2014 Southwestern graduate, reached an agreement with the team last week.  The Grand Junction Rockies are the Rookie Affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. 

Westphal is a graduate of Martensdale-St. Mary's High School.

EJ Johnson signs with Spartans

Omaha’s EJ Johnson, a six-foot shortstop, center fielder, and pitcher, has committed to playing for Southwestern Community College’s baseball program beginning with the fall 2016 semester.

Johnson, a 2016 graduate of Harry A. Burke High School in Omaha, was an all-state honorable mention selection for baseball. In spring 2016, he was asked to play in the 44th Annual Collin-Orcutt All-Star Baseball Game and was a member of Omaha’s Strike Zone Elite baseball team.

Nick Ekel, head coach for Southwestern Community College track and field, announced two incoming student-athletes who he believes will make an immediate impact on the program.  Ronald Henderson, Jr. from Akron, OH, and Anthony Gonzales from Brownsville, TX, both signed national letters of intent last week for Southwestern’s track and field program.
