SWCC Men's Basketball vs. Central CC Columbus

Coming off their first loss of the season, the Spartan men bounced back with a 93-71 non-conference win over Central Community College of Columbus, NE, Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017.  The victory completed a perfect non-conference season at 18-0 which includes victories over five NJCAA DI programs.  Southwestern defeated Central on November 19 in Columbus by a score of 83-67.

The Southwestern men dropped their first game of the year in heartbreaking fashion to move to 23-1 on the season and 6-1 in ICCAC play.  The conference match-up, in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 11, vs Kirkwood provided the opportunity for the Spartans to fight for the win right up to the closing seconds.  Kirkwood hit a three-pointer with 2.1 seconds remaining to win 78-75 and move into a first-place tie with the Spartans at 6-1 in ICCAC play.

On Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11, the Southwestern Spartans track and field team traveled to the 2017 South Dakota State University Indoor Classic in Brookings, SD.  The Spartans continued their 2017 indoor season streak of school record-breaking performances.  Specifically, the record came in the distance medley relay, consisting of a 1200-meter run, 800-meter run, 400-meter dash, and 1600-meter run. The relay of Jalen Two Leggins, Kevin Dietrich, Jeremy Newton, and Caleb Peterson accomplished the new school record.

Kierra Brice signs with SWCC

Addae Houston, Southwestern Community College’s head women’s basketball coach announced today he has signed Omaha Northwest player Kierra Brice to the Spartan team for their 2017-18 season.

Brice’s high school team at Omaha Northwest is 14-7 at this point in their 2016-17 run. She will graduate from high school in May 2017.

On Saturday, Feb. 4, the Spartans went head-to-head with the Trojans of North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in a matchup that would move one team into fourth place in the ICCAC standings, as both teams came in with a 3-3 record.

At the start, neither team gained any significant ground over the other.  Both teams shot the ball well and created some turnovers with their defense that led to a few easy baskets. As the first quarter came to a close, the Trojans held just a five-point advantage over Southwestern.

Southwestern Men's Basketball Fourth Consecutive Week #1 Ranked NJCAA DII Poll for Feb 7, 2017 #SpartanNation 23-0

Southwestern used a pair of home victories over Iowa Central (87-64) and North Iowa Area (91-55) to push their record to 23-0 and remain the number one ranked team in NJCAA Division II basketball.  This is the fourth consecutive week for the Spartans to hold the top spot and the third week in a row as the unanimous number one.

Ashley Porter and Hannah Ryan sign with Spartan Volleyball

Ashley Porter and Hannah Ryan, of Davis, IL, have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their volleyball careers at Southwestern Community College.

SWCC vs Iowa Central

Southwestern looked to get back on track following Monday’s close loss to Kansas City Kansas Community College as they hosted the Tritons of Iowa Central Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 1.  With a 2-3 record in the ICCAC, the Spartans hoped to add another win to match last year's win total in conference play.

The Spartans fell behind early and trailed the Tritons through the entire first half and went into the break down 26-18 which is their lowest scoring output of the season for a half.
