Creston, IA—The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) sports shooting team placed 15th in trap shooting during the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Collegiate Clay Target Championships in San Antonio, TX, held March 25-30, 2014.  There were approximately 70 colleges and universities competing in the event.

The SWCC sports shooting team had three squads, consisting of five students each, qualifying to compete at the national shooting event:

  • Blue Squad - Ethan Jolliff, freshman from Indianola; Ben Fox, freshman from Newton; Heath Evans, freshman from Diagonal; Matt Mitchell, freshman from Indianola; and Trenton Cheers, freshman from Indianola.
  • Red Squad - Jordan Brand, freshman from Indianola; Cami Feehan, freshman from Albia; Chisum Downing, freshman from Creston; Katie Fuller, freshman from Osceola; and Billy Ellis, sophomore from Weldon.
  • White Squad - Colton Offield, freshman from New Virginia; Morgan Knorr, sophomore from Savannah, MO; Chase McDonald, sophomore from Chariton; Katie Konsitzke, sophomore of Chariton; and Amanda Spencer, freshman from Bedford.

Jolliff and Evans each finished 95 of 100, just three targets short of qualifying for the Olympic training camp.  Two of the SWCC women—Feehan and Fuller—finished in the top 100 for women.  Six of the SWCC men’s competitors shot their best scores ever.

“For this being our first year of competition, I am extremely proud,” stated Charlie Mundy, SWCC head sports shooting coach.  “To face the competition we faced and have a number of our student-athletes shoot their best scores ever, that says a lot about the caliber of our team.”

This is the first year for the Spartans sporting team.  The SWCC sports shooting team has traveled throughout the academic year to shooting events, competing against teams from across the Midwest.  The team is open to men and women.  The college’s sports shooting team holds practices at the High Lakes Outdoor Alliance in Afton.
