Two Mt. Pleasant High School seniors—Cody Bruggemeyer and Justin Woods—made it official last week, they are headed to Southwestern Community College in Creston this fall where they will participate in sports shooting.
Bruggemeyer, the son of Chris and Rob Bruggemeyer of Mt. Pleasant, plans to enroll in the college’s welding program. During high school, he was a member of the Clay Commanders shooting club. The Clay Commanders were the 2013 district champions and Southeast Iowa Zone Team. Bruggemeyer was the 2012 Iowa Junior Grand Champion and the 2013 Southeast Iowa Zone Champion. In addition, he was selected to represent the state of Iowa at the Grand American National Shooting Competition on Team IOWA.
Woods is a member of the Clay Commanders shooting club. He was a 2013 district champion. He plans to enroll in the welding program at SWCC. During high school, Woods has been active in Boy Scouts and he is a high school honor student.
He is the son of Denise and Gene Woods of Mt. Pleasant.
Charlie Mundy, SWCC sports shooting head coach, feels these two athletes will be a great addition to his team. “I look for Cody and Justin to fit right in and begin challenging for position within our team,” stated Mundy. “In turn, the competitiveness should push our team’s overall scores to an even higher level.”
This year marked the first year for the Spartans’ sports shooting program. With Mundy at the helm, the Spartans qualified for the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) Collegiate Clay Target Championships in San Antonio, TX, in March. The Spartans took three squads and placed 15th in trap shooting. There were approximately 70 colleges and universities competing at the event.
