The Spartans indoor track and field teams traveled to Grinnell on Saturday, February 8 and the women turned in some of their best performances of the season at the Grinnell Invitational finishing 8th in a field of twelve teams. The men got the day going with a strong finish in the 4x200 as Bobby Neal, Marquis Flowers, Theo Piniau, and Justin Martin finished third with a 1:32.79.
The Spartans had a strong day in the field events as Torian Parks finished tied for second in the triple jump 12.76m (school record). Parrish McGhee jumped to a 3rd place finish in the long jump as he reset his school record with a 6.24 meter jump. Parks and Martin led the way in the 60m when both qualified for the finals and finished third and sixth. Jackson Shantz ran a 8.92 to end up fifth in 60m hurdles. Ian Morrison and Joe Bierl went third and fifth in the 600m (1:26.18 and 1:26.51). Piniau ran a 51.05 to win the 400m. Rayvonne Brown finished third in the 800 and Aaron Ward earned a fifth place finish in a strong field. The distance medley relay Of Gage Beers, Tailor Greer, Nathan Carr and Ben Friederichs came from behind to finish second.
The meet ended on a high note as the men's 4x400 team ran away with a victory as they set a school record of 3:28 almost six seconds ahead of the competition. Members of the relay are Morrison, Flowers, Brown and Piniau. Next up for the Spartans is the Regional Championships held at Buena Vista College on February 26th.
The Spartans will have a weekend off while they prepare for the Region XI Indoor Championships on February 21 hosted by Buena Vista University in Storm Lake.
