Creston, OCTOBER 22, 2009--Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Head Coach Rita Schroeder hit a huge milestone at the conclusion of the Spartans’ home volleyball match-up against Clinton Community College on Wednesday night. The Spartans’ victory over the Cougars put Schroeder’s coaching record at 700 wins.
In the most recent documents published by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), Schroeder ranks in the top five active coaches for winning records in Division II of the NJCAA. This makes her the highest ranking active volleyball coach in the state of Iowa.
Following the game, Bill Krejci, SWCC athletic director, presented Schroeder with a trophy marking the occasion. Schroeder thanked Southwestern and the Creston community for supporting her during her career at the helm of the Spartan team. She mentioned how thankful she is for the players, former players, and parents she has gotten to know throughout the years. Schroeder gave a special thank you to her friend and longtime SWCC coach Ron “Fox” Clinton for helping her get her start in coaching.
She laughed as she recalled how Clinton coaxed her into coaching the sport of volleyball, which she knew little about. “Fox plucked me straight out of Simpson (to coach at SWCC),” Schroeder explained. “The first three years I cried the whole time, but since then, it’s worked out fine.”
“Fine” is not the adjective most others would use to explain everything Schroeder has accomplished at Southwestern. In her 25th year as coach for the Spartans, with an overall record of 700 wins-367 losses, Krejci said two of Schroeder’s strongest attributes are her intensity and her compassion. “It’s so rare that you would get both of those qualities in a coach,” Krejci stated.
Krejci also points to her loyalty as something that makes her unique as a coach. “I’m sure throughout the years, she’s had other offers come along, but she’s chosen to stay here at Southwestern.” Krejci continued, “She is committed to this college and to her players.”
Southwestern and the athletic staff are extremely proud of what Schroeder has accomplished.
“She’s been coaching for 25 years,” Krejci finished. “When you compete at this level for that long, it’s really a special achievement.”
