The Spartan women have continued their season progress by picking up their first conference win. This win on the road against Southeastern CC in Keokuk on Saturday, January 4 snapped a 22 game conference losing streak. A solid defensive effort and good shooting in the first half allowed the Spartans to control the game early on.
Head coach Addae Houston commented, “We moved the ball well in that half and did a good job of finding the gaps in their zone defense for some easy open looks. The lead at the end of the first half was 32-17 behind good shooting and solid defense.”
Southeastern rallied in the second half to keep the game close, led by Blackhawk Brittany Bryan with 13 points on the game. The nearly caught the Spartans with 15 second on the clock, 52-50. Southeastern would foul quickly after scoring and sent Jordan Williamson to the line. Williamson hit two critical free-throws to extend the Spartan lead to four. The Blackhawks attempted a quick three-pointer but missed and Peyton Russell grabbed the rebound to secure the win as time ran out.
