Coon Rapids-Bayard High School’s Tina Lair-Van Meter has committed to the Spartans women’s basketball program at Southwestern Community College for the 2017-18 season.

Lair-Van Meter, who will graduate from Coon Rapids-Bayard in May, has received a number of high school honors for basketball. She was a 2017 Iowa Basketball Coaches Association Class 1A all-region team selection, a 2017 Rolling Valley Conference first team all-conference selection, and a 2016 Rolling Valley Conference honorable mention selection. In the classroom, Lair-Van Meter has excelled as an honors student.

Southwestern Community College Head Women's Basketball Coach Addae Houston received word this week, Spartan sophomore Julanie Carter, of Des Moines, was named First Team All-Region following the 2016-17 basketball season.

The Spartan women's basketball team finished the 2016-17 regular season on Saturday, March 4, with a 16-14 record overall and 5-9 record in conference play.  The team is ranked as a fifth seed going into the 2017 NJCAA Region XI DII Women's Basketball Tournament.  This marks the highest tournament seed the Spartans have received in many years.  The Spartans will start tournament play on the road at fourth-seed Southeastern Community College in Keokuk, on Tuesday, March 7, at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, Southwestern made the trek to Cedar Rapids to take on number one ranked Kirkwood Community College.  The Spartans were eager to get back at the Eagles following their 103-69 home loss back on Jan. 14 in Creston.

On Thursday, Feb. 9, Southwestern notched its 13th win of the season as they defeated Simpson JV 62-60 in Indianola. That win surpasses the most wins the women’s basketball team has had since the 2002-03 season when the squad finished 14-12 overall.
