Pedro HernandezA new era of baseball is set to begin at Southwestern Community College (SWCC). Bill Krejci, SWCC athletic director, announced late last week Pedro Hernandez of Iowa Falls will succeed Brian Smith as head coach of the Spartan baseball program. He will begin recruiting immediately.

Hernandez comes to SWCC from Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls where he has been the assistant baseball coach and a TRiO—Student Support Services coordinator since September 2012. Hernandez was a strength and conditioning coach for the Washington Nationals baseball team in 2011 and on the coaching staff with Team Puerto Rico Baseball AAU 18U in 2009.

Hernandez plans to hit the ground running in his new head coaching position. “I am very excited to be joining the SWCC family,” Hernandez stated. “I would like to thank Bill Krejci [SWCC athletic director] and the rest of the SWCC administration for the opportunity to lead their baseball program. I am going to work hard to build a program that not only SWCC will be proud of, but the community as well.”

Bill Krejci, SWCC athletic director, is looking forward to having Hernandez at the helm of the Spartans baseball program. “Pedro brings tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm to the game,” Krejci explained. “He also brings a familiarity to our league, having played at Indian Hills and coached at Ellsworth Community College. He already has a tremendous network established for recruiting due to his last four years of coaching.”

Hernandez has a master’s degree in kinesiology from Dallas Baptist University in Dallas, TX, and a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant.

In addition to his coaching duties, Hernandez will be a residence hall coordinator for SWCC’s student housing department.
