Head Coach - Bill Huntington
Cross country coach Bill Huntington has been at the helm of SWCC's cross country program since 2006. Huntington is an excellent recruiter and has done a remarkable job with the Spartans. In 2006, Huntington was named regional coach of the year after he led the Spartans to a regional title.
For nine years, Huntington was the head cross country coach at Orient-Macksburg High School in Orient, IA. During that time the team won six conference championships, 40 invitational championships, one district championship, and placed as the district runner-up four times. Huntington's high school teams have qualified for the state championships five times and placed very well at each meet. In 2004 we qualified 13 events for the state meet without even having a track to practice on. Individually Orient-Macksburg has had multiple state qualifiers and place winners in cross country and track and field. I have a passion for the sport of running and I am very excited about the upcoming season.
Each fall SWCC runs a full schedule against colleges from Iowa and other neighboring states thus creating the type of exposure that enhances the reputations of SWCC's athletes among Division I, II and III colleges across the midwest.
SWCC cross country facilities are fantastic. The runners practice on SWCC's 50-acre campus which borders a golf course, which the team also spends time on. There is also a state park a little over a mile from campus that has a 500-acre lake and multiple running trails. The team has access to an Olympic sized swimming pool and indoor running track located in the Southern Prairie YMCA, located on SWCC's campus across the parking lot from student housing.
