Cross Country Home
Cassidy Warson, May 2013 graduate of Madrid High School, has signed a letter of intent to cross country and track & field.
The Southwestern Community College women’s cross country team received word they were among the top 10 academic teams in the nation during their fall 2012 season. The Spartans ranked eighth in the national team standings released this week by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Cross Country Coaches Association.
In addition, the Spartans had four individuals who were named as Academic All Americans by the NJCAA Cross Country Coaches Association. These scholars, who are carrying grade point averages of 3.40 or above, include Regina Hafner, sophomore from Panora; Kristin Klocksiem , freshman from Glidden; Kalli McCann, sophomore from Osceola; and Courtney Wagner, sophomore from Ottumwa.
The Spartan men and women ended a great 2012 cross country season at the NJCAA National Cross Country Championships in Rend Lake, IL. The women finished 31st in the nation and the men were 33rd. The 2012 meet was the largest national championship meet held in the history of the NJCAA. There were more than 50 teams with 500+ runners competing. Spartan sophomore Kalli McCann made history herself by finishing 46th. This is the highest placing by a female runner in Southwestern's cross country history. The Spartan men were led by freshman Gage Beers of Osceola. Beers finished in 150th to pace the Spartans.
When asked to sum up the season Head Coach Bill Huntington remarked, "This year's team was one of the hardest working teams we have ever had at Southwestern. Their performances at nationals and throughout the season were phenomenal. A lot of that had to do with Kenny Blass, Delaney Turner, Regina Hafner, Adam Pool, Dave Prchal, and Kalli McCann. Their leadership was invaluable to our team."
The Spartan men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to Marshalltown on Friday, October 26, for the Region XI Championships. The men’s team finished third, led by sophomore Dave Prchal, who finished 24th overall with a time of 28:36 for the 8k race and was named to the Honorable Mention All-Region team. Prchal was followed by freshman teammates Auston Carter (27th) and Gage Beers (28th).
The Spartan women were led by sophomore Kalli McCann who came in 10th place with a time of 20:00 for the 5k women’s distance. For her top 10 finish, McCann was named to the Region XI Second Team. Fellow sophomores Delaney Turner (22nd) and Regina Hafner (24th) were named to the Honorable Mention All-Region team.
Congratulations to the Spartans on another great cross country season.
