The Southwestern Spartan men and women runners had strong performances over the weekend as the men finished 4th/10 and the women 6th/10 at Sauk Valley Invitational. The women were led by Kalli McCann (pictured) who finished 7th overall for the women. The women's race was run in a torrential downpour but the rain and the slick course did not slow down the Spartans. Regina Hafner, Delaney Turner, Courtney Wagner and Kristin Klocksiem rounded out the top five scorers for the Spartans as they finished strong in preparation for the upcoming Regional Championships.
The Spartan men got to run in the rain as well finishing fourth overall in what could be best described as tough conditions. Auston Carter (13th, pictured) and Dave Prchal (17th) led the men in a strong field. This was a very strong showing for the men as they were able to defeat a strong Illinois Central squad and a Prairie Valley State team that had beaten them earlier in the year. Finishing out the top five for the Spartans were Gage Beers, Rayvonne Brown and Josh Cobb.
The Spartans are off for a week before the Regional Championships in Marshalltown.
Cedar Rapids- The Spartan harriers were on top of their game at the Lamb KoHawk Invitational in Cedar Rapids this past weekend. On a cool, crisp, and windy morning, 12 Spartan runners set all time personal records in the 8K for men and the 6k for women. Spartan Assistant Cross Country Coach Cari Stalker said, "This was a great day for our runners. The weather was windy and cold, yet we ran some incredible times on a challenging course."
Leading the way for the men were Gage Beers, freshman from Osceola, and Auston Carter, freshman from Coon Rapids. Stalker said it was a battle to the end with Carter edging Beers to finish 20th. Four Spartan men ran the 8k in less than 29 minutes to finish fifth overall.
The Southwestern Cross Country teams were in action Friday night at the Viking Invitational hosted by Grand View University at Ewing Park in Des Moines, IA. Both teams ran exceptionally well with the women finishing 6th and the men finishing 4th in two very tough fields. Leading the way for the women was Kalli McCann who finished 10th overall. She was followed by Regina Hafner in 30th, Delaney Turner 32nd, Courtney Wagner 35th, Kristin Klocksiem 41st and Brei Theisen. Coach Huntington was impressed with the team's finish and commented, "We ran with a purpose today and our times showed it. Kalli was impressive finishing in the top 10. Courtney had a great race as well. She pitched a softball game across town and then came and ran her best time of the season. The improvement the women are showing is incredible."
Not to be outdone, the Spartan men turned in some solid times to finish fourth in a field that was dominated by four-year colleges. Auston Carter (pictured on right with Dave Prchal, left) led the men finishing 14th in a time of 28:18. Huntington said, "Auston's race was great to watch. He, along with all of the men, wanted to show that they can compete with anyone and they certainly did that with their fourth place finish."
The Spartan men had four runners under 30 minutes in the 8K race and are really gearing up as they near the middle of their season. For complete results check the cross country schedule page.
The Southwestern Spartan cross country runners continued to show the signs of teams on the rise after their performances at the Les Duke Invitational at Grinnell College. After coming off of two very strong performances at the Waubonsee Invitational the Spartan Men and Women took the huge jump in competition in stride and ran some fantastic times at the "Duke."
Leading the way for the Spartan men was Dave Prchal (Omaha, NE) as he paced the team to a top 13 finish. Out front for the 24th ranked Spartan Women, was Kalli McCann (Osceola, IA) finishing 39th in a time of 25:02 over the tough 6K course. Coach Huntington was very excited with the results on Saturday. "We came into this meet a little sore and tired after a week of strong training after the incredible finishes at Waubonsee. We knew we had to bring our game to Les Duke given all of the great teams that were going to be there and we ran very well. Dave and Kalli ran especially well leading our squads."
