For the first time ever, the Spartan men and women gathered on their own turf to run the 2011 Region XI Cross Country Time Trials. More than 100 runners from eight Iowa college teams competed in the event Saturday morning on SWCC's Creston Campus.
The Spartan women showed up ready to run. Kelli McCann, freshman from Osceola, and Regina Hafner, freshman from Panora, were able to crack the top 20 for the women. McCann came in 11th place with a time of 21:37.1 while Hafner came in 14th place with a time of 22:48.6. Chelsi Palmer, the lone returning sophomore from Casey and team captain, ran a time of 26:34.3.
The Spartan men finished fourth with Dave Prchal, freshman from Omaha, NE, leading the team finishing 24th with a time of 18:20.1. Luke Hood, freshman from Marshalltown, followed with a time of 18:50.4 and Jason James was right behind him with a time of 19:21.7.
This meet was the first-ever cross country meet hosted by Southwestern. The Spartans will run at home again on October 29, when SWCC will host the Region XI Championship. The next cross country meet for the Spartans will be September 3, 9:30 a.m. at the Central College Invitational in Pella.
