The Spartan Men and Women Cross Country teams got the weekend off to a great start by finishing 4th (women) and 5th (men) on Friday at the Viking Invitational held at Ewing Park in Des Moines.
The Spartan Women got the first crack at the hilly course at Ewing Park Friday night were they finished 4th as a team. Pacing the women harriers was Chelsi Palmer of Adair, Iowa. She ran the course in 23:24 to finish 20th overall. Finishing in 23rd was Jess Lamb in a time of 24:13. Coach Stalker of the Spartans was especially pleased with the performance of the women. "The progress these women have made since the start of the season is incredible. In every race we are seeing fantastic growth in them as runners. Chelsi, Jess, Kelli, Kaylee and Amy are doing what it takes for us to be a good team. That course on Friday was challenging and they hit it hard and ran well." The women finished with 123 points edging out Buena Vista College for 4th place.
The Spartan Men Cross Country teamed continued their season's success by finishing 5th in a loaded field of teams at the Viking Invitational in Des Moines. Sam McKinney of St Charles, Iowa led the Spartans by finishing 12th overall in a time of 28:06. Coming in right behind him was Walter Bolingo in 14th in a time of 28:11. Coach Bill Huntington was impressed with the men and their races. "Coming into the meet we knew we were going to be short handed with DeAndre Ingram being out of the lineup with a foot injury. For us to have success our 3,4 and 5 runners had to step up and take care of business and our runners did that. Clayton Fritz, Ethan Warrior and Matt Carr finished 26th,33rd and 35th overall and we needed them to run well and they did." The Spartans have an off weekend as they get ready for their next meet.
