Mike Holmes came to Southwestern in 2008 to join the men’s basketball program as head coach. Holmes has 20-plus years of coaching experience, and knows what he looks for in recruits. Character and reputation are of extreme importance and he always seeks to find student-athletes that will excel both on and off the course.
Holmes came to Southwestern from Ottumwa High School, where he was the head basketball coach and a high school administrator for six years. Holmes worked his way through the ranks in Iowa high school athletics and went into a number of school districts not known for their athletic programs, rebuilt them, and made them competitive in their respective leagues.
His first years in coaching were spent at the Waverly-Shell Rock, Spirit Lake, and Allison-Bristow school districts in Iowa. He was at Des Moines Roosevelt for five years in the late-90s and moved to Cardinal Ritter in Indianapolis, IN, prior to his stint at Ottumwa.
At Southwestern, Holmes teaches physical education courses. He has his bachelor's degree from Simpson College in Indianola and his master's degree from Iowa State University in Ames. He and his wife Leeanna live in Creston.
