Southwestern got a win they needed in a 65-56 victory over Grand View Friday night, January 24, in Creston. The first half was a back and forth battle, with the Vikings jumping out to an 8-2 advantage, but then the steady attack led by Elliott Hamdeed and Tanner Kellogg began to bring the Spartans closer. With some foul problems for Mataika Koyamainavure and Larry Mason, however, Grand View led at the half, 28-27.
Southwestern managed to get on top early in the second half, but could not distance themselves from Grand View. Koyamainavure and Jared Theis had key finishes at the basket, and defensive plays from Mason and Nick Lenhard allowed the Spartans to keep control until they were able to get a larger advantage near the game’s end with some press-break scores and clutch free throws.
Southwestern will next play Saturday at home against Iowa Lakes. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
