Southwestern Community College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Todd Lorensen has released the teams schedule for the 2014-2015 season. The Spartans tip off the regular season on Monday, November 3, versus the Yellowjackets of Graceland University. The rest of the non-region schedule is highlighted by a November 29 visit from former Spartan Head Coach Jerry Drymon and Central Nebraska. The Spartans finish the fall semester schedule with a visit to Iowa Western on December 17. The Region XI schedule tips off on January 14 against Ellsworth in Creston.
With just two weeks under his belt at Southwestern Community College (SWCC), Spartan Head Coach Todd Lorensen is busy setting the framework for a new era of men’s basketball at SWCC. Earlier today, Lorensen announced Tyler Bullock, director of men’s basketball operations at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO), as his new assistant coach.
Bullock, a native of Lincoln, NE, has been with the men’s basketball program at UNO since 2012. He is a 2011 graduate of UNO with a bachelor’s degree in business. While a student at UNO, he was a standout on the basketball team, ranking among the top 50 nationally in scoring his junior and senior years. As a junior, he was in the top 40 nationally for free throws.
Todd Lorensen, originally from Monroe, has been announced as the next head coach for the Southwestern Community College (SWCC) men’s basketball program. Lorensen will succeed Mike Holmes, who left SWCC this summer, after seven years at the helm of the Spartans, to become head coach at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Lorensen, a Prairie City-Monroe High School graduate, heads to SWCC from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, where he has been the head men’s basketball coach and assistant sports information director for the past year. Prior to coaching at Iowa Wesleyan, he spent two years as assistant men’s basketball coach at Truman State University in Kirksville, MO, where he helped the team qualify for the MIAA conference tournament for the first time in six years. At Truman State, he also served as a health & exercise science instructor. Lorensen has coaching experience at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Grand View University in Des Moines as well.
T.J. Bower, the all-time leading scorer in Nodaway Valley history, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Southwestern. Bower’s numbers are gaudy. He ranks number one all-time with 1,463 points and 245 steals. He is second on the all-time list with 627 career rebounds, and third in assists. Bower averaged 20.4 points per game in his senior season, but scoring is not what Head Coach Mike Holmes feels is his greatest asset.
