Due to Clinton High School being closed today and board policy prohibiting evening events after closure, the men’s basketball game scheduled for tonight at Clinton will be moved to Thursday, February 20, at 7:30 p.m.
In a game Head Coach Mike Holmes called, “One of our more technically sound performances,” Des Moines Area used blistering outside shooting to keep a gap on Southwestern Wednesday, taking the contest 83-65. Despite its own solid offensive performances, including eight of nine from the floor from Elliott Hamdeed and three three-point goals from Jared Theis, Southwestern could not cash in on its plan to force outside looks from the Bears.
Des Moines Area was 20-26 from the floor and 10 of 21 from behind the arc. Five rebounds from Mataika Koyamainavure paced the Spartans. Southwestern next plays Saturday at Ellsworth. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Due to travel conditions, the Spartan’s game with Clinton was postponed Wednesday and moved to Monday, February 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Clinton.
With an uncharacteristic 15 miscues in the first half leading to turnovers, Southwestern could not gain ground on talented Iowa Lakes in the second half, falling 64-40 in Creston Saturday. With solid defensive possessions keeping them in striking distance, the Spartans tried in vain to get things clicking on the offensive end; however, cold shooting and ball mistakes forced the home team into an 18-point halftime deficit.
In the second half, the Spartans protected the ball better and were more efficient offensively, at one point reducing the lead to 10 on a three-point goal from the corner by Tanner Kellogg; however, Elliott Hamdeed fouled out of the game with quick back-to-back violations, and Southwestern could inch no closer despite big defensive rebounds from Mataika Koyamainavure and a solid all-around second half from Jared Theis.
The Spartans travel twice this week. Wednesday, February 5, they will be in Clinton for a 7:30 tip.
