Seth Starks of Springfield, NE has signed a national letter of intent to run track and field at Southwestern Community College. Seth is multi-sport athlete at Platteview High School in Springfield, Nebraska. He is a starter on their football and basketball teams as well as being a stellar track and field athlete.
The 2014 Spartan track team competed in their first meet of the season on Saturday, January 18, at Dordt College in Sioux City. Two Spartan runners qualified for nationals on the day. Sophomore Rayvonne Brown finished eighth in the 600m with a time of 1:24.65 giving him a chance to run again at nationals in March. Freshman John Rivan will be joining him at as he posted a fourth place finish in the 55m dash in a time of 0:06.52.
According to Head Coach Bill Huntington, there were other Spartans close to qualifying for nationals as well. Mel Mangrum in the women’s shot put was one of them. Mangrum’s distance of 39’ 5.75” earned her a seventh place finish, but according to Coach Huntington, fell short of the qualifying distance by a mere inches.
Three individuals from the SWCC track and field team competed at the NJCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Hutchinson, KS, on May 16-18, 2013.
Molly Schimp (left), freshman from Hampton, competed in the high jump finishing 12th in the nation. Kalli McCann (center), sophomore from Osceola, finished a great running career at Southwestern by finishing 25th in the 5000 meters. Jackson Shantz (right), freshman from Greenfield, finished 29th in the 400 meter hurdles.
Three sophomores from the 2012-13 track and field team have signed national letters of intent to continue running after they transfer. Dave Prchal signed with Chicago State, a Division I college located in Chicago, IL, where he’ll be running cross country as well as track and field; Kalli McCann signed with Grand View University in Des Moines where she’ll run cross country and track and field for the Vikings; and Regina Hafner will continue her running career at Bethel College in North Newton, KS, where she’ll participate in cross country and track and field.
Chris Aguilar of San Antonio Texas Memorial High School has signed a letter of intent to run for the Southwestern Community College track & field team during the 2013-14 school year. Aguilar's high school coach is Creston High School alum Zach Hood.
