Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Head Coach Bill Huntington has announced Brandon Johnson of in Marshall, MO, as his latest track and field recruit for the 2013-14 season. 

Johnson, a senior at Marshall High School, will graduate from high school this month.  He competes in the long jump, the 100 meters, 200 meters, and 400 meters.

At SWCC, Johnson will be an arts and sciences transfer student and will be working toward his associate of arts degree.

Three Spartans will be heading to Hutchinson, KS, on Wednesday, May 15, to take part in the NJCAA DI Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. Molly Schimp will be the first of the Spartans to compete on Thursday morning. She will be competing in the women’s high jump, trying to better her 14th place finish from her trip to the indoor national championships in March. Jackson Shantz will be competing Friday afternoon in the preliminaries for the men’s 400 meter intermediate hurdles. If Shantz qualifies for the finals, he will get a full day to rest before the finals on Saturday afternoon. Kalli McCann will take to the track late Saturday afternoon for the 5,000 meter run.

SWCC track and field teams at the Souix City Relays 2013

The Spartan men's and women's track and field teams traveled to northwest Iowa this past weekend for the Sioux City Relays held in Sioux City on April 13-14. Competing in a field of several two- and four-year colleges and through wind and occasional snow flurries, the Spartans reached the medal stands in three events. The team of Dave Prchal, Rayvonne Brown, Joe Bierl, and Auston Carter received the Silver medal for the distance medley relay. Kalli McCann received fifth place in the 5000 meter run. Marquis Flowers captured the bronze medal in the 400 meter dash.

The Spartan men got the outdoor season rolling by placing in multiple races at the Viking Invitational hosted by Grandview College. Marquis Flowers and Terrence Gaye finished seventh and eigth respectively in the 100 meter dash to start the meet for the Spartans. Not to be outdone Josh Cobb finished fourth in the 10,000 meter running his best time to date. The distance medley relay of Joe Bierl, Rayvonne Brown, Dave Prchal and Austin Carter turned in some solid splits to finish 3rd overall at the Viking Invite. The men's 4 x 800 meter relay turned in good times to end up fourth in their race on Saturday.
