UPDATE--Congratulations to Head Coach Lindsay Stumpff and the SWCC Spartans on an outstanding season of softball! The Spartans ended their season today vs. DMACC. The final score was 5-1.
The SWCC Spartans softball team continues to battle in the Region XI Softball Championship at Fort Dodge. The double elimination tournament started on Thursday, May 3, 2012, and wraps up today.
On Saturday, the Spartans played DMACC and won 2-1 on last minute heroics by Londen Miller in the bottom of the seventh inning. The DMACC Bears then played Iowa Central on Sunday morning. DMACC advanced from that game.
That led to a re-match between the Spartans and the Bears on Sunday at 5 p.m. The final score was 3-1 with the Bears earning the victory.
So today, the DMACC Bears and the Spartans will play for the third time. The Region XI Championship game is at 1 p.m. At this point, DMACC and SWCC both have a loss, so the winner of today’s game will be the Region XI Champion and advance to District play.
Good luck Spartans! We are proud of you!

With only two returning sophomores, the 2011-12 Spartan softball team made some waves. The team hit a number of milestones including setting a new school record for number of wins in a season, at 40. Also, three players bested the school’s previous single season hit record. Freshman Leah Kipfer crushed the old record of 60 hits, with 85 hits this season. Out of those hits, Kipfer had 10 home runs and 18 doubles. Sophomore Londen Miller and freshman Danyielle Barger edged out the previous record as well, with 62 hits each.
The Spartans finished their regular season 40-19 overall and 16-12 in the conference. Some of the highlights on the season included starting their spring break trip to Florida with a record of 7-4. Their last two games in Florida started their longest winning streak of eight games. The Spartans traveled to a tournament in Columbus, NE, where they swept their competition six games to none. Four of those tournament games were against three Division I NJCAA teams. More recently, the Spartans beat the #9 nationally ranked Kirkwood Eagles at home, putting a strong exclamation point on the end of an already stellar season.
Congratulations to SWCC Head Softball Coach Lindsay Stumpff for achieving her 100th career win yesterday, April 2, 2012, vs. Simpson! With this win, the Spartans' softball team improves to a record of 20-9 on the season, 7-5 in the league.
“Coach Stumpff has taken the program to new heights since her arrival at Southwestern,” stated Bill Krejci, SWCC athletic director. “She has shown continual growth with the program by increasing in wins every year since she’s been here. She has a very talented group of athletes this year and they are a legitimate force in the league.”
The Spartans will be in home action today vs. Grand View at 3 p.m. and tomorrow vs. DMACC at 3 p.m.
Stumpff has been at the helm of the SWCC softball program since 2006.
