Last night, Monday, October 14, the Spartan volleyball team made quick work of a home match-up vs Grand View University's junior varsity. The Spartans shut down Grand View in the first game, 25-7, but the Vikings wouldn't give up as the next two games were much more competitive, 25-19 and 25-18.
Head Coach Melissa Blessington said, "We started out with a lot of fire and intensity and then we let Grand View make a run on us early in the second match and had to fight back for the win the rest of the way. We had a long weekend and it was important to us to make sure and take a team like Grand View seriously because they are always tough for us to play. Grand View was scrappy on defense and made us work for every point in the second and thirds sets. We have to stay focused as we make our post season run and every match is a chance for us to get better."
The Spartan Volleyball team had a weekend full of play as they traveled to Boone to play on in the DMACC Invitational on Friday, October 11 and Saturday, October 12. The Spartans swept a trio of wins with their only losses came in four games (18-25, 13-25, 25-23, and 18-25) against second ranked Parkland Community College.
Head Coach Melissa Blessington said, “This was a very good weekend for us. Playing Parkland was a great experience for our girls they are ranked #2 in the country and it was good to see that we can play with teams like that. I know that we are still looking to continue to get better and this tournament was a good measuring stick for us. Last year we went 0-4 against many of the same teams. I know our girls felt good about their play and I know we are going to keep fighting to get better.”
The Spartans defeated the Southeastern CC Blackhawks on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at home in three games, 25-13, 25-21, and 25-12. Head coach Melissa Blessington commented on the match, "This was a great game for us tonight. Southeastern is a very good team. Mattie Grey their outside is the number one hitter in the country she can really put the ball away and we had to execute our game plan tonight which was to key on her. We did a great job blocking and serving. Ashley Strong and Cassidy Yong hit their zone in key points of the game and that really disrupted their offense."
The Spartans five match winning streak came to an end on Tuesday, October 1 when they traveled to the eighth ranked DI Iowa Western Reivers. Head Coach Melissa Blessington said, “Iowa western is a tough team. I'm glad to see some fight in the third game. This just means we have room for improvement.”
