The Spartans five match winning streak came to an end on Tuesday, October 1 when they traveled to the eighth ranked DI Iowa Western Reivers. Head Coach Melissa Blessington said, “Iowa western is a tough team. I'm glad to see some fight in the third game. This just means we have room for improvement.”
The Spartans notched up one more conference victory on Friday, September 27, when they defeated the visiting Ellsworth CC Panthers in three games. The Spartans only allowed a stingy 45 points in the match, one of the lowest totals on the season.
Spartan Head Coach Melissa Blessington commented on the match, “We had a great match tonight against Ellsworth. We have a tendency to come out slow against teams and tonight we did the opposite. I really think the girls are playing in a great rhythm right now and things are just rolling for us. In the first match we had some great serve receiving and that is what led to Cassidy Yong being able to distribute to our hitters. We are incredibly balanced in hitting and we are hitting very efficient. We need this five-game winning streak to bring us into playing Iowa Western. We know they are a good team and that we are going to need to be playing our best. I know our girls are not at our peak yet and that we still have work to do in order to make our run at the end of the season. Playing in conference play is very difficult night in and night out and we have to just stay mentally focused.”
Keeping their drive from the previous night’s road victory, the Spartans traveled to Norfolk, NE to play the Northeast Nebraska CC Hawks. After winning a close first game (26-24), the Spartans took the next two games to complete the sweep (25-15 and 25-17).
Head Coach Melissa Blessington commented on the match, "This was another good match for us. This is Northeast's first season with volleyball and they are a very good team. We did a great job putting the ball away and that came from great defense. We need to keep this momentum going because we face Ellsworth Friday in regional play."
This win put the Spartan atop a four-match winning streak and 16-7 overall on the season. They will head back to conference play on Friday, September 27, when they host the Ellsworth Panthers.
The Spartan volleyball team headed to Ottumwa on Tuesday, September 24 to defend their five-game home opener win against the DI Indian Hills CC. This time around, the Spartans made their stay a short one defeating the Warriors in three games, 25-21, 25-15, and 25-20.
Head Coach Melissa Blessington said, “We played some great volleyball tonight against a good Indian Hills team. We served aggressively and also played some great defense tonight. We had some long rallies and we were able to win those rallies. This is proof our team is getting better every match.”
