The Spartans went on the road on Saturday November 22, to take on the Southeast Community College Storm. To start the game the Spartans fell behind early 6-0 due to some full court pressure from the Storm that forced several costly turnovers.
“This has been our biggest problem in every game this year. We have to find a way as a team and coaching staff to generate better starts to our games,” commented Coach Addae Houston. The Spartans went into half-time down 40-20 struggling to get anything going offensively. “It was a hard fought game in the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome. Our offense and defense improved but it was too little too late and once you get down on good teams they will not let you back in the game.”
The Spartan women could not hold on in yet another close loss on the road facing Grand View for second time this season falling to the Vikings 68-64. Grand View took an early lead in the game 7-2 on consecutive three-pointers. The Spartans fought back to regain the lead at the half 35-32 behind great bench play from Jazzlyn Wimbush, Peyton Russell and Cambry Schluter who combined for 32 of the Spartans 64 total points. The bench was great for us but we have to find a way to put it all together from our starters and bench to finish these close games.
The Spartan women battled in yet another close game this season against Graceland and unfortunately came up short once again dropping the game 85-82. Several ties and lead changes was the story for both teams at the start but the Spartans were able to string together several defensive stops along with some key offensive possessions to take a nine point lead 48-39 to conclude the first half. Head coach Addae Houston commented, “It took us awhile to find some offense early on but we had a great stretch of both offensive and defensive possessions where we scored points and had stops to close the first half.”
The Spartan women’s basketball team hosted the Pirates of North Central Missouri College on Monday, November 10, and could not get it going offensively to begin the game. The Spartans found themselves down 9-0 early on in the game after a poor shooting start and were never able to gain any momentum to make it a game falling to North Central 78-53. Despite the poor offensive start the Spartans were playing solid defensively holding the Pirates to only 12 points through the first eight minutes of the first-half. “I thought we were playing solid defensively, but not being able to score I think led to less effort on defense and that cannot happen,” said Head coach Addae Houston. The Spartans finished the first-half down 19 points to North Central, 36-17.
