The Spartan women’s basketball team overcame a huge hurdle at Grand View on Tursday, November 14. Their 59-55 victory brought the program’s 34 game losing streak to an end.

The start of the game was slow for both teams as both sides struggled to shoot the ball early on. Grand View’s full-court press made the difference in the first half. The Vikings forced the Spartans to give up 13 turnovers and had an eight point lead 30-22 going into the locker room.

Head coach Addae Houston commented, “We did not play very well in the first half and the turnovers were a big factor, but our lack of rebounding gave them too many second chance opportunities that they were able to convert. I was very disappointed with our effort going into the after the first half but the team responded with great effort and intensity in the second half rebounding the basketball and playing solid defense. I am so proud of the way the team continued to fight for 40 minutes.”

The Spartans were able to overcome a 10 point deficit and take the lead with less than three minutes to go in the game. They maintained that lead with solid shooting from the free-throw line late in the game.

Houston continued, “Jill Vanderhoof hit two big free-throws with around five seconds to go that gave us a four point lead to help us win the game. Although so many players played well in the game tonight, Sophomores Morgan Knorr and Darian Polson help carry our team to a great win. Both players nearly had a double-double in the game.”

Knorr had 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Polson was able to add 10 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and three blocks.

“Not only was it great to see Morgan and Darian play as well as they did, the win tonight was such a tremendous step in the right direction for this program as we were finally able to end the streak of 34 consecutive losses dating back to the 2011-12 season. I feel like a great burden was lifted off the backs of these players and this program after tonight’s game.”
