Player Name: Kaley Folkerts
High School: Bedford High School
Comments from Coach Gilcrist: Like her volleyball teammate Amber Thomas, Kaley Folkerts will be joining the Spartan Women’s Basketball program as a two-sport athlete this winter. Highly regarded as one of the best pure athletes in Iowa last season, the recommendations not only came from coaches but even parents in the local community. Coach Gilcrist had this to say about his latest commit, “Kaley will fit well into our up-tempo, aggressive system and we will look for her to provide much needed depth to our team. She one was of the first girls I tried to contact when I took this position and I feel blessed that she has decided to try to play multiple sports at SWCC.”
With two returning players, seven new players, a new head coach, and a new assistant coach, the Spartan women's basketball season is set. The 2011-2012 schedule has been posted and lady Spartans will start their season on October 22 in Omaha, NE. The Spartans will make their first home appearance on November 9 against William Penn JV. Mark your calendars now and plan to come cheer on the Spartans in their upcoming season. Go Spartans!
Player Name: Amber Thomas
High School: Council Bluffs St. Albert High School
Comments from Coach Gilcrist: A former teammate of Hannah Sneed’s and one of only two returners this season, Amber Thomas is someone I am really happy I get the opportunity to coach. Amber has received plenty of recognition for her contributions on the volleyball court and in the classroom last year. Nonetheless, I am more proud of her improvement as a basketball player last season. She not only improved technique and intensity, she showed up every day with a smile on her face and the heart of a lion inside. I know Amber is going to be a great leader for me this year and I know she is going to help us in the paint defensively and rebounding.
Player Name: Kylee Loftus
High School: Logan-Magnolia High School
Comments from Coach Gilcrist: Kylee is an exceptional student, a great athlete, and an even better person. Kylee plans to pursue a degree in nursing during her time at SWCC and will play a huge role for the women’s basketball program at the same time. She will be the post player we build around as I believe she can set the tone on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Under the tutelage of Coach Kevin Patterson (now at Ottumwa High School), Kylee received great instruction. I hope to build upon that coaching to help Kylee prepare for wherever her next stop in life takes her.
