The Spartans struggled with an unexpected slow start against Southeastern. They eventually found themselves on the losing end of a 63-41 final. Head Coach Addae Houston said, "I thought we had practice well leading into that game but we had too many unforced turnovers in the first half and that allowed them to take control of the game."
First half score was 36-9. In the second half we shot the ball better and limited our turnovers but the lead was too much to overcome. Darian Polson lead all scorers with 14 points along with eight rebounds. Morgan Knorr also contributed 11 points and two steals.
The Spartans faced Iowa Lakes for the second time in conference play on Saturday, February 1, and it was a much different game then the first meeting losing to the Lakers by 17 points. A slow start offensively and poor rebounding by the Spartans led to too many second chance point opportunities for the Lakers which allowed them to be in control for the majority of the first half but only led by four 26-22.
Head Coach Addae Houston said, "We have struggled all year with rebounding, but I will never make the excuse that we are too small. We just have to be better at holding off bigger players and give effort."
On the road against Simpson JV on Monday, January 27, the team had four players reach double figured points. Sophomores Darian Polson (15 points) and Morgan Knorr (14 points) led all scorers. Additionally, Freshman Peyton Russell and Jill Vanderhoof each scored 10 points in the 59-52 win over Simpson.
Head Coach Addae Houston said, "It was good to see the team move the ball as well as we did. We talk a lot about having confidence to hit open shots when they are there and the entire team was able to do that tonight."
The Spartans hosted the Division I Marshalltown Tigers on Saturday, January 25 struggled to a 84-54 loss. Head Coach Addae Houston said,"Marshalltown got off to a quick start shooting the ball extremely well from the three-point line and took a commanding lead early on. We did not shoot the ball well even though we were getting decent looks. The thing that hurt us the most in this game was not taking care of the basketball. The team had 21 turnovers for the game."
