This weekend, May 15-17, 2014, at the NJCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Mesa, AZ, Southwestern’ s men’s and women’s track teams continued the success they had during the regular season by turning in record breaking times and distances at the national meet.
Bill Huntington, Southwestern Community College head track and field coach, recently added three student-athletes from southwest Iowa to the Spartans’ 2014-15 women’s track and field roster.
The Spartans indoor track and field teams traveled to Grinnell on Saturday, February 8 and the women turned in some of their best performances of the season at the Grinnell Invitational finishing 8th in a field of twelve teams. The Spartans were on top of their games with multiple placings during the day. Mel Mangrum finished second in the shot put and made the finals for the weight throw. Rhecie Lee kept her incredible season going with high finishes in the high jump (5th) and 4th in the long jump. Genesis Johnson ran her best time of the season and finished 5th in the 200m.
The 2014 Spartan track team competed in their first meet of the season on Saturday, January 18 at Dordt College in Sioux City. Two Spartan runners qualified for nationals on the day. Sophomore Rayvonne Brown finished eighth in the 600m with a time of 1:24.65 giving him a chance to run again at nationals in March. Freshman John Rivan will be joining him at as he posted a fourth place finish in the 55m dash in a time of 0:06.52.
According to Head Coach Bill Huntington, there were other Spartans close to qualifying for nationals as well. Mel Mangrum in the women’s shot put was one of them. Mangrum’s distance of 39’ 5.75” earned her a seventh place finish, but according to Coach Huntington, fell short of the qualifying distance by a mere inches.
