Outley Joins Spartans

Dominique Outley

A high priority for the coaching staff at Southwestern this recruiting season was a point guard.  The Spartans feel they have their man with the transfer of Dominique Outley.

Outley joins Southwestern after a year with Johnson County, a national power in Division II junior college basketball.  Outley appeared in 13 games for the Cavaliers last season, and brings the ability to beat pressure and make decisions when attacking the basket that the Spartans have not had for the past two seasons.

“Dominique will free some of our returners who had to handle the ball last season,” said Head Coach Mike Holmes, “which will allow them to start working off screens early in the possessions.”

Holmes added, “Point guard is a huge position on a team.  Dominique will be very accomplished in getting us into our stuff and creating opportunities for his teammates.  We are thrilled to have him on board.”

Outley attended Southeast High School in Kansas City prior to his freshman season at Johnson County.

Fisher Headed to Eastern Arizona

Kyl Fisher on the sideline

Creston, IA, JUNE 28, 2010--Kyle Fisher, a two-year assistant coach for the Southwestern men’s basketball program, has accepted an offer to serve as the assistant coach at Eastern Arizona, a Division I junior college.

As the lone assistant for the Spartans, Fisher was responsible for academic progress, pre-season conditioning, recruiting, film analysis, and practice supervision.

SWCC Head Coach Mike Holmes said, "Kyle was an important part of our program. With one assistant, the head coach needs someone with maturity, perspective, and knowledge. We were fortunate with Kyle to have someone wise beyond their years. He really adapted to the intricacies of our program and embraced what we are trying to do."

Fisher’s final act for Southwestern was assisting at the school’s team camp June 26-27, 2010. Fisher also served as transfer specialist for the college. The search is underway for Fisher’s replacement.

Sealer Transfers to Southwestern from Ft. Hays State

The Southwestern Spartans grabbed a well-regarded guard out of the ranks of four-year Division II when they signed Luke Sealer, a guard from Lee’s Summit, MO.  Sealer chose to red-shirt his freshman year at Ft. Hays State, a powerful DII program that was ranked as high as #3 nationally this past season.  Sealer wanted to make more of an immediate contribution, so began looking around.  He has ties to current Spartan, Alec Hall, who is also from Lee’s Summit.

Head Coach Mike Holmes said, “Though our program is built more from blue-collar, thinking-man’s players, it certainly gives us a boost to get a guy who would be considered a blue-chipper.  Luke fits right into our family as a person of integrity, and adds very good skill on the floor to that equation.”

Sealer will transfer to the Spartans as a freshman for the 2010-11 season.

Raytown Athlete Added to Roster

Jordan Hopkins

The Southwestern Men’s Basketball program has added Raytown High School (Missouri) standout Jordan Hopkins to its recruiting class.  Hopkins, a 6’3 forward, will likely be asked to fill the role of departing forward Chad Boston.

“Jordan fills our primary criterion in that he is a person of integrity," said Head Coach Mike Holmes.  "The bonus is that he is athletic and has a tremendous understanding of the game, which fits well with what we do.”

Hopkins is not the first Raytown Blue Jay to play for Southwestern.  Ryckey Harper, a 2008 SWCC graduate, also attended Raytown.  Harper is now playing at Baker University in Baldwin City, KS.
