Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

EMS Technician

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has an active program at Southwestern.  EMS is offered through SWCC's adult and continuing education department. Below are some brief descriptions of the programs we offer.  For a full description of our programs, please see our brochure.

First Responder
The First Responder is an integral part of the Emergency Medical Services System. Following the US DOT National Standard First Responder curriculum, the goal is to provide students with the core knowledge, skills, and attitudes to function in the capacity of a First Responder.

EMT—Basic
This course covers the US DOT National Standard Emergency Medical Technician- Basic (EMT-B) curriculum, which presents assessment-based education and interventions, and includes Iowa specific enhancements. This course meets or exceeds the EMT-B guidelines of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and the Iowa Department of Health, Bureau of EMS. Clinical and field components are required for course completion.

Paramedic Specialist
The Paramedic Specialist utilizes the US DOT National Standard Paramedic curriculum. This course provides education for treatment of patients in the prehospital setting using advanced life support procedures including pharmacological interventions and treatment of cardiac dysrhythmias.
