The Student Support Services (SSS) Program provides support and assistance to help college students complete their academic studies at Southwestern Community College and transfer to a 4-year college or university to complete a Bachelor’s Degree. The SSS professional staff provides individualized services that address specific needs of students as they confront the challenges of completing a college degree. SSS is funded 100% ($249, 944) by the U.S. Department of Education and serves 180 participants each academic year. A variety of services are provided to assist students.

Services offered include:

  • Tutoring - SSS provides student driven tutoring in the Arts & Sciences core classes for students who are either in SSS or eligible for SSS.

  • Academic/Career Advising - Advising is available to SSS students who would like help in determining short term and long term goals. We work closely with Career Services to help students move toward their career goals.

  • Scholarship/Grant Aid Assistance - SSS participants are advised of the various types of financial aid available and the methods needed to obtain that aid. Grant Aid assistance is provided through the SSS program to many participants who complete applications and are qualified for the award.

  • Academic Workshops- Throughout the year, SSS offers workshops based on the requests and needs of the SSS students.

  • Cultural/Social Activities- SSS members are encouraged to participate in cultural/social activities sponsored by SSS and SWCC. These activities may include educational field trips to museums, concerts, plays, musicals, etc. SSS invites two educational speakers to campus for a Lunch & Learn seminar. An Honoring Banquet with a special guest speaker is held each Spring to recognize participants for their accomplishments throughout the year.

  • Transfer Assistance- For those who plan to continue their education beyond SWCC, there is assistance and information available to enable the successful transfer to four-year institutions. SSS has a Transfer Specialist on staff who will provide participants with opportunities to visit other colleges.

Student Support Services students are eligible to participate and enjoy these and other SSS benefits at NO COST.

To be eligible for Student Support Services, students must be at least one of the following:

  • First generation college student, (neither parent has a Bachelor’s Degree) or
  • Low income individual, (based on Federal Financial Aid) or
