SWCC Overseeing Union County PAT Program

CRESTON — Southwestern Community College’s TriUMPH Early Childhood Program recently began overseeing the Parents as Teachers (PAT) program for Union County.  The program offices are being housed inside the Creston Early Childhood Center at 901 North Elm Street, Creston.

The Parents as Teachers program provides parent education and family support to families from birth until the child enters kindergarten, usually at age five.  With the program, parents are provided with support and guidance from Parents as Teachers-certified parent educators through fun activities, family fun nights, and personal interaction.  TriUMPH’s two parent educators are housed in the Union County office.

According to Terry Wangberg, Southwestern’s TriUMPH coordinator, the college was excited for the opportunity to take on the Parents as Teachers program in Union County.  “We have been working with early childhood programs and teachers to improve the quality of the care and education for young children in SWCC’s area for the past 12 years,” stated Wangberg.  “Taking on parent education was a nice, natural extension of our work.”

TriUMPH is a collaboration between Southwestern Community College and the Dekko Foundation.  TriUMPH’s PAT program is funded by Union County Empowerment and Child Abuse Iowa.  The mission of the TriUMPH Early Childhood & PAT Program is to support early care and education programs and providers in preparing young children and their families for future success.
