Creston— The Southwestern Community College board of trustees met on Tues., November 8, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. in the board room of the Administration Center.

A public hearing was held for renewal of a tower land lease with Electronic Engineering. The tower is located on SWCC’s Creston campus. The current land lease expired spring 2011. No written or oral objections or petitions were heard or submitted. The board voted to approve the new lease as presented. The land lease will run June 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012, and is for $500 per month.

In personnel, the board accepted the resignation of Brandi Shay, business instructor. Shay, of Tingley, has been an instructor for the college since August 2001.

During the president’s report, SWCC sophomore Donovan Richardson spoke to the board about the importance of the college’s Trustees Awards. Richardson thanked the board for making these scholarships available to students. The Trustees Award is available to valedictorians and salutatorians of their high school graduating classes. The scholarship awards full tuition and fees for four consecutive semesters to qualifying students, given students are full-time and maintain a 3.50 grade point average. Students must attend SWCC immediately following high school graduation to be eligible.

Jerry Smith, board of trustees member from Osceola and SWCC representative for the Iowa Association for Community College Trustees (IACCT), reported that the IACCT finance committee met recently. The committee is looking at various cost saving measures.

The board then went into closed session to discuss the purchase or sale of real estate by the college.

Following the meeting, many of the board of trustees members and college administrators attended SWCC’s annual Donor/Scholar Recognition Night in the college’s Instructional Center. The dinner is sponsored by the college Education Foundation. More than 200 people were in attendance.
