Southwestern Community College student Samantha Takes, a sophomore music major and Phi Theta Kappa member, is organizing a community event, Join 1 Billion Rising, which will be held on Thurs., February 14, in two time frames, 11:30 am-1 pm and 6:30-8 pm, in Room 180, of the Instructional Center.

The event will be a part of the international social movement, 1 Billion Rising. The event recognizes and protests the violence against one in three women (more than one billion globally) who are raped and beaten during their lifetimes.  Come support these 1 billion women and those who love them by joining in poetry, live music, a short video, and dancing.  You are welcome to learn "Break the Chain"—a dance millions of others across the world will be doing at the same time. Leslie Tyler of Leslie’s Dance Emporium and Jen Frakes, Zumba instructor, will be teaching the dance portion of the event.

Southwestern’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter and the Rural Iowa Crisis Center are sponsors for the event.

MLKdayToday, January 21, from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m., come to room 220 of the Instructional Center to view videos documenting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his service and dedication to equality, social justice, economic advancement, and opportunity for all. He taught us that everyone has a role to play in making America what it ought to be and with his leadership our nation made great strides toward increased civil rights.

King believed we should all serve each other, not making this holiday a “day off, but as a day on” of serving others.

Volunteer to go with a group of SWCC students from 1-3 p.m. Monday to Crest Haven nursing home to visit with the residents, maybe read to them, paint their nails, or just give them someone to talk with. Transportation will be provided to nursing home.

Questions may be directed to Tracey Evans, student activities coordinator.
