CRESTON, IA—Beth Kulow, area regional manager for the Governor’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) initiative has announced more than 170 teachers and community leaders will be participating in Scale-Up programs for the STEM initiative. Statewide, more than 800 schools and community organizations will have the opportunity to experience STEM programming and activities.

ArtKioskSouthwestern Community College's art & design department recently received notification they were the recipient of a grant from the Iowa Arts Council.  The grant funds were used to purchase a kiosk, which will be utilized as a virtual art gallery for the art & design department.  The kiosk in position (shown in photo at right) is located in the main entry of the Instructional Center.  Two additional kiosks will be located in the SWCC Student Center and in uptown Creston, possibly at the restored depot. 

Once the kiosks are fully functional, the kiosks will provide details about current art venues and events in and around the area; information regarding SWCC's art & design programs; biographical sketches of local artists and their work; display exhibit work of SWCC students, local artists, and other students in the college's region; and much more.  The kiosks feature a large monitor to display artwork, as well as a touch screen viewers will use to browse through the galleries.

Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met Tuesday, October 10, 2012, in the administration center on the Creston campus.

During the meeting, Ken Rech of Red Oak was re-elected as president of the college’s board. Dennis Davis of Greenfield was re-elected as the board’s vice president. SWCC Assistant to the President Mary Jo Skarda was re-appointed as board secretary and SWCC Chief Financial Officer Teresa Krejci was re-appointed as board treasurer.

The board re-appointed members to the Education Foundation board for the 2012-13 year. Education Foundation board members re-appointed include Patti Bricker of Greenfield, Randy Huewe of Creston, Karl Knock of Creston, Rick Oshel of Osceola, Allen Pohren of Red Oak, Jerry Smith of Osceola, Alec Turner of Corning, Larry Giles of Mt. Ayr, Amy Hook of Creston, Connie Purdum of Creston, and Dr. Barb Crittenden, SWCC representative.

The SWCC Education Foundation hosted a breakfast for SWCC retirees on Wed., October 10, 2012, in the Student Center. Dr. Barb Crittenden, SWCC president, and administrative cabinet members talked to the retirees about current happenings at the college, as well as offered them a summary of tornado recovery.  They dined on breakfast from the Spartan Cafe.

schroeder rita ForWeb 0478OCTOBER 10, 2012—The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) athletics department has announced the college’s volleyball court will be named “Rita Schroeder Volleyball Court,” in honor of the Spartans’ long-time SWCC volleyball coach.  The court insignia will be unveiled in a ceremony prior to the Spartans’ Wed., October 24, 6:30 p.m. volleyball match against Grand View JV.  The game, which is the last home game of the season, is also Parents’ Night for the team.

3dSimulator CollisionRepairOCTOBER 5, 2012--The Southwestern Community College collision repair/refinish program recently received an exciting delivery--the SiM Spray 3D Virtual Paint System. SimSpray is an immersive virtual reality painting simulator. It will assist SWCC instructors in the teaching of spray painting and coating fundamentals.

With the system in place, students will learn correct body positioning and movement for proper painting and coating techniques. The student operating the system will use a simulated paint gun and headgear to enter an immersive virtual reality environment where he/she will apply "paint" to specific areas of automobiles. The student will view the simulator through the head gear as it tracks his or her motion and painting techniques.

Southwestern Community College in Creston is hosting a National Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) Day Odyssey, known as Odyssey Day on Thursday, October 18, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the automotive area of the Instructional Center on the Creston campus.  Odyssey Day will be focused on looking at the use of alternative fuels and learning about advanced technology vehicles.

Dainty DrawingSouthwestern Community College Art Instructor Linda Dainty will be exhibiting "Selected Works" at the Creston: Arts Depot Gallery from October 2-29, 2012.  The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1-4 p.m. 

Dainty's "Selected Works" will include drawings and paintings she has completed since starting her teaching career at SWCC in 1999.  

The opening reception will be this Friday, October 5, from 6-8 p.m. at the Creston: Arts Depot Gallery, 116 W. Adams Street, in uptown Creston.

Representatives from the Union County Auditor’s Office will be at the SWCC Student Center on Wed., October 3, 2012, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. to assist students with voter registration, requesting absentee ballots, and any other voter questions.  Students should bring a current Iowa driver's license or ID with them when they come.

Reynolds Kim STEM

Iowa Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds was on campus Wed., September 19, 2012, for a STEM Conversations meeting in the Instructional Center at 1:30 p.m. Reynolds was accompanied by Ben Allen, president of the University of Northern Iowa. The two have been traveling the state educating the general public and answering questions about STEM.
