How Do I ... Cite Resources

What is a citation?
A citation identifies for the reader the source of the origin of the idea or information which is referred to in your paper. A basic citation includes the author, title, publication information and other elements to help the reader locate the original work.

What do you need to cite?

  • Quotes
  • Paraphrasing
  • Unfamiliar knowledge
  • Information from books, articles, websites, music and films

What format do you use?

Most of your instructors will ask you to use the MLA or APA style for citing your sources. Ask your instructor which style sheet they want you to use and if there are other special formatting instructions you should follow.
