Community Awareness Day for Students

CommunityAwarenessPoster2014SWCC will host its annual Community Awareness Day on Wednesday, September 10, from 9-11 a.m. in the main hallway of the Instructional Center.  A variety of community agencies will be on hand to provide information to SWCC students and staff about the services they provide.

Agencies that will be providing information include:

Volleyball Tailgating Moved Inside

Due to the weather, volleyball tailgating tonight (starting at 5 p.m.) will be inside the Student Center. The volleyball game vs. DMACC will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center gymnasium.

Students Place at National Auto Competition

CRESTON — Southwestern Community College (SWCC) automotive collision repair/refinish students Zach Mullen of New Market and Garrett Hogue of Lenox took home second and fifth place finishes respectively at the 2014 SkillsUSA Championships held June 25-26, 2014, in Kansas City, MO.

Southwestern’s Board of Trustees Holds July 2014 Meeting

Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at 8:30 a.m. in the president’s office of the Administration Center for their regular board meeting.

The board approved the annual dues of $3,288 to the Higher Learning Commission, Chicago, IL.

Tom Lesan, SWCC vice president for economic development, reported to the board regarding progress being made at Spartan Court, the new residence hall being constructed on campus.  Lesan said the concrete work is near completion and progress continues to take place on finishing the inside of the building.

Beth Kulow, SWCC dean of student services, reported the college’s summer 2014 enrollment is 517 students.  Kulow stated this was an increase of 35 students from summer 2013.

Lesan said an insurance adjustor was expected to be on campus later in the day July 8 to inspect the water damage in the Administration Center.  The damage happened on Sun., June 22, following a break in a water line leading into the Administration Center.

Southwestern’s Board of Trustees Holds June Meeting

Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the college’s Administration Center for their regular board meeting.

Bill Taylor, SWCC vice president of instruction, talked to the board regarding a proposal to partner with Union County Habitat for Humanity for the third year on construction of a house during the 2014-15 school year by SWCC’s high school carpentry program in Creston.  Students from area high schools are eligible to enroll in the high school carpentry program.  The Habitat for Humanity house will be built at 622 North Birch Street in Creston.  The board authorized the college to enter into the building partnership agreement.

Southwestern’s Board of Trustees Holds May 2014 Meeting

Creston— The Southwestern Community College (SWCC) board of directors met on Tues., May 13, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the SWCC Administration Center for their regular monthly board meeting.

During the meeting, the board approved a resolution directing the sale and delivery of $5.34 million in Dormitory Revenue Bonds to D.A. Davidson & Co. in Des Moines.  Larry Burger, vice president of Speer Financial, Inc., spoke with the board, stating that following Speer Financial’s examination, it was their recommendation for approval of the bid.  It was noted that Moody’s Investors Service has assigned a rating of A3 to the bonds, which have a true interest rate of 3.8748 percent.
